Lighthouse’s north campus in Houston will be “Indefinitely Closed” due to significant damage from Hurricane Beryl. The Lighthouse Church
The Lighthouse Church, one of Houston’s largest congregations and one of the nation’s fast-growing Black churches, announced Wednesday that its main campus suffered “significant damage” from Hurricane Beryl this week and is now “closed indefinitely.”
“Although we’re still assessing the complete extent of the damage, we know our building will not be usable in the foreseeable future,” Lighthouse spokesman Brian Smith said Wednesday via email, referring to its north campus in Humble. “From what we’ve determined so far, the roof has collapsed in several locations, including the sanctuary. There is water damage to many rooms of the building, and much of the electrical system is compromised.”
Smith noted that the church’s staff was “stunned at the loss of our building” and yet “grateful” that no one from the church was injured during the storm that killed several people and left millions without power as it swept through the city Monday morning.
Lighthouse has four physical campuses around the city, as well as a considerable online ministry. “Although the north campus cannot be used, Lighthouse is not closed,” Pastor Keion Henderson said Wednesday afternoon in an X post that included photographs of the damage. “We are here for our community. We are resilient and strong and with God’s grace and strength, we will overcome this.”
Pastor Henderson had recently celebrated the success of late-June’s “Cry Out Conference 2024,” which featured the pastor’s mentor Bishop T.D. Jakes and NFL legend turned Colorado University football coach Deion Sanders at the George R. Brown Convention Center downtown. The senior pastor and his wife, Shaunie, the ex-wife of NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal and an executive producer and star of the VH1 reality series Basketball Wives, were on a “scheduled sabbatical” for the month when the storm hit Houston, Smith said.
Many across Houston have also been picking through the damage since Hurricane Beryl made landfall. Christian, Muslim and Jewish faith leaders have told me in recent days that an increasing number of religious institutions remain without electricity and running water. Congregation K-Nesseth Israel in Baytown suffered severe damage to the facade of its 94-year-old building during the storm.
Pastor Henderson posted a video Wednesday of Hurricane Beryl’s damage to Houston and the Lighthouse campus and said in a post that he was asking “that all of our brothers and sisters across the nation and around the world pray for our Church, our community, our city, and each other as we rebuild with a renewed spirit of healing in God’s love.”
In Wednesday’s announcement, Smith said Lighthouse is still open and available for their community and for members in Houston and across the world. “Rebuilding is a daunting task,” Smith added. “However, if there is but one defining trait that unites us, it is our resilience. We have faced storms before—and we have overcome. We have faced massive repairs to our homes before—and we have overcome. We have faced heartache before—and we have overcome. When we are in our toughest test, this is the time to cry out for God’s strength, courage, and comfort.”
