Llewellyn said he’s “more concerned about the voices that attempt to downplay this than I am about those who would seek to burn down CCM in response.” But he added that CCM needs a “dramatic culture shift.”

“I want to see an end to the parts of CCM that tolerated and incubated this abuse, I’d gladly see those parts die,” he told TRR. “But if I’m honest I’m torn because I also want people to continue to hear good news about a God who loves them no matter what, and to experience the joy of singing about that together.

The Guardian’s report, written by freelance journalist Josiah Hesse, outlined the stories of seven men.

One man, under the pseudonym of “Jacob,” alleged he was massaged by Tait while sharing his king- size bed in 2005. This survivor previously spoke to TRR under the name “Phillip,” and was one of three survivors who came forward in our June 4 exclusive.

The six new stories show a pattern of grooming by Tait, some with intoxication or drug use leading to black-outs, then sexual assault.

‘The pinnacle of godliness’

The first survivor in the report, named “Gabriel,” told The Guardian he believed he was drugged by Tait before the former Newsboys front man assaulted him. The burgeoning Christian musician was 19 when he met a then-38-year-old Tait. Tait began taking Gabriel to bars, buying him drinks while underage, and inviting him to house parties, Gabriel said. This reportedly led to being invited to Tait’s house alone, where Gabriel was introduced to cocaine.

Gabriel stated that one night at Tait’s house, they consumed vodka, Red Bulls, and drugs, before Tait urged him to get into a hot tub.

“(Tait) grabbed my crotch and tried to kiss me at the same time”, Gabriel said. “It wasn’t subtle, and it was out of nowhere. I asked him, ‘What the hell is going on?’ He said he was just joking, but then he did it again. I jumped out of the pool and drove home, which I shouldn’t have done because I was more intoxicated than I’ve ever been, but that’s how scared I was.”

A previous survivor of childhood sexual abuse, Gabriel said that Tait had been sympathetic, and “betrayed that trust.”

“To this day, I jump whenever someone touches me unexpectedly,” Gabriel said. “When something like that happens to you, you feel like the worst person; you feel dirty, worthless. It’s heartbreaking to think someone you look up to could do something like that.”

Gabriel told The Guardian that Tait was presented to him as “the pinnacle of godliness,” and that while he “blamed God’ for his trauma for a while, he still has faith.

“I get that people sin, but to use that as a facade of his righteousness to commit sin, that made me walk away from my faith for a while,” he said. “He took something from me that I’ll never get back. In time, though, I found my way back to God.”

The Guardian report states that Gabriel did not tell anyone about the incident, until he spoke to his friend Shawn Davis 15 years later.

Assaulting a minor

Shawn Davis, who chose to go on record with his name, spoke candidly in The Guardian’s report about experiencing the same pattern of grooming and abuse at the hands of Tait. This occurred at approximately the same time as Gabriel, who he introduced Tait to. But this time, it began when Davis was a minor.

Davis has also spoken extensively with TRR about his story, sharing the same details and facts over a period of five months. Only recently, though, did Davis give TRR his story on-the-record.

Now a business owner in Nashville, Davis was 16 when he met Tait at a party in 2003. He considered Tait’s former band DC Talk as heroes because, “They were Christians, but they rocked out.” He told The Guardian that he and Tait went to bars and parties together, where Tait was able to get him drinks underage. He was also introduced to cocaine by Tait alone at the superstar’s home.

A sexual assault survivor, Davis said, “Tait made me feel like, and seem like, he was my only friend.”

He said that one night at Tait’s house, Tait mixed and served him a drink that tasted strange. Feeling dizzy and sick, he began going in and out of consciousness.

“I woke up in the closet, and he had my pants down, and was giving me a blowjob,” Davis told The Guardian. “ I pushed him off as best as I was able in that state, but he pushed me down, and then I punched him twice and left.”

Davis was 17 when this occurred and said that Tait “love bombed” him to try and reconcile. Eventually, Tait allegedly apologized, but convinced Davis that it was his fault.

“He was very manipulative, and I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt,” Davis said.

Davis stayed friends with Tait, and said that in 2012, Tait tried to pay him for a sexual favor. He was sitting in Tait’s kitchen, when he received a text message from Tait, who was in his bedroom. The picture showed approximately $5,000 in cash.

“He said something to the effect of ‘This could all be yours if you let me suck you off and c** in your ass’,” Davis told The Guardian. Davis quickly called his mother and was picked up before Tait realized he had left. Davis’s mother corroborated this.

After reading Tait’s “Confession” on Instagram earlier this week, Davis told TRR he does not believe Tait is repentant.

“I didn’t believe his apology—it felt hollow, like he was dodging real accountability,” he said. “Instead of owning up to what he did, instead he shielded himself behind Christianity.”

Buried into the fabric of Nashville

Israel Anthem, a Nashville-based videographer was also named in the report, states that Tait masturbated in front of him in public restroom when he was 13.

Anthem, who is related to the late Gospel music legend Dottie Rambo, grew up with Tait as a family acquaintance. He told TRR that his incident with Tait occurred at Houstons (now Bricktops) Restaurant in Nashville’s trendy West End.

“Tait came into the restaurant after my family and stopped by our table to say hi,” he told TRR, in a statement that matched his story shared in The Guardian.

“Forty-five minutes later, I walked to the male restroom,” he said. “We were both standing in front of the urinal making polite conversation. I finished, so zipped up my fly and walked to the sink to wash my hands. Michael kept talking, and when I turned around, he was facing me with his d*ck out. He kept eye contact with me for 20 to 30 seconds and kept talking. I thought he was zipping up his pants, but he was rubbing his penis. It felt like an eternity.”

A family member of Anthem’s told The Guardian that he was, “as white as a ghost,” when he returned from the bathroom.

Anthem said he chose to put his name on the record with The Guardian and TRR because Tait’s influence has infiltrated the Christian music industry.

“Knowledge about Tait’s predator behavior is so intrinsic to Christian music, his nails are burrowed into the fabric of it, that any validation of his behavior invalidates the whole industry,” he said to TRR.

“There are three types of people in Nashville: Those who know the stories about Tait, are survivors and are terrified; Those who validate the stories about Tait, believe them to be true and wait for the day justice happens; And those who will cash a check with Tait despite knowing the truth.”

Odd encounters

Two men shared in the Guardian’s report that Tait behaved inappropriately and left them feeling uncomfortable.

An up-and-coming DJ named “Zach” was invited to Tait’s house when he was 29 with the promise that they could work on music together.

“He was doing a solo tour and said: ‘What we need is a DJ who can come on the road with us,’” Zach said to The Guardian. “And I asked: ‘That would be so cool! What would I need to do?’ And he said: ‘You need to hang out, come around [my house] a lot.’”

Zach said that he was invited into Tait’s studio, which was his bedroom, and encouraged to sit close to Tait. He also spoke to TRR about his encounter with Tait, and TRR cited emails dated July 11, 2008, that placed Zach at Tait’s house.

“He plays (me) a new song, a love song. He’s singing it over the top of the recording, ad lib,” Zach said to TRR.  “This would be a concert-level performance if it wasn’t so weird. (All I knew) is that I’ve just got to get out of here.”

Today, he is grateful he left Tait’s house shortly after being serenaded.

“It’s wild to think what could have happened if I did not have my antenna up,” he told TRR.

Another man, named “Abraham,” told The Guardian that Tait once stroked his thigh and his ear at a lunch meeting in 2006. Abraham, who was 22 at the time, also shared his story with TRR, and said it occurred at Nashville’s Macaroni Grill.

“Within a few minutes of the conversation Tait touched my earlobe, and toward the end of the meal, put his hand on my thigh,” Abraham told TRR.

“I was a very naïve young man. So, while I thought it was awkward, I certainly didn’t think the worst. He was talking about how (former DC Talk member) Toby (Mac) was raised (believing) your hair has to be off of your ear. (He mentioned) going to Liberty University. Most people, if they were going to do a gesture, they would touch their own ear. He reached out and kind of caressed my earlobe.”

“Don’t get molested!”

The sixth survivor reported on by The Guardian, named “Adam,” said he met Tait at the age of 22. Describing Tait as “the Christian Elvis,” Adam said that he was dropped off at a bar to see Tait, and as he exited the car, a friend said, “Don’t get molested.” This occurred in 2004.
