What is the Antichrist?

First John 2:18 speaks of the Antichrist: “Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” The specific term antichrist is used five times in Scripture, twice here in 1 John 2:18 and once in 1 John 2:22; 4:3; and 2 John 1:7. So, what is this Antichrist that the apostle John refers to?

The meaning of the term antichrist is simply “against Christ.” As the apostle John records in First and Second John, an antichrist denies the Father and the Son (1 John 2:22), does not acknowledge Jesus (1 John 4:3), and denies that Jesus came in the flesh (2 John 1:7). There have been many “antichrists,” as 1 John 2:18 states. But there is also coming the Antichrist.

Most Bible prophecy/eschatology experts believe the Antichrist will be the ultimate embodiment of what it means to be against Christ. In the end times/last hour, a man will arise to oppose Christ and His followers more than anyone else in history. Likely claiming to be the true Messiah, the Antichrist will seek world domination and will attempt to destroy all followers of Jesus Christ and the nation of Israel.

Other biblical references to the Antichrist include the following:

The imposing, boastful king of Daniel 7 who oppresses the Jews and tries to “change the set times and the laws” (verse 25).

The leader who establishes a 7-year covenant with Israel and then breaks it in Daniel 9.

The king who sets up the abomination of desolation in Mark 13:14 (cf. Daniel 9:27).

The man of lawlessness in 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12.

The rider on a white horse (representing his claim to be a man of peace) in Revelation 6:2.

The first beast—the one from the sea—in Revelation 13. This beast receives power from the dragon (Satan) and speaks “proud words and blasphemies” (verse 5) and wages war against the saints (verse 7).

Thankfully, the Antichrist/beast, along with his false prophet, will be thrown into the lake of fire, where they will spend all eternity in torment (Revelation 19:20; 20:10).

John MacArthur has stated that the Antichrist, described in Daniel 11:37, could be homosexual, but he presents it as one possibility among other interpretations of the verse. The prophecy says of the Antichrist, “he shall not regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all” (KJV).

MacArthur, in a 1992 sermon on the “coming man of sin,” discusses the Antichrist’s potential sexual orientation based on this passage. He notes the phrase “he has no regard for the desire of women” and offers two possibilities:

Homosexuality: MacArthur presents the idea that this phrase could mean the Antichrist does not have a normal sexual desire for women.
Celibacy: He also suggests the Antichrist might be heterosexually celibate, spurning normal marital life.

Will the Antichrist be a Homosexual?

In a passage that many Bible interpreters understand to be a double prophecy about Antiochus Epiphanies and the end-times Antichrist, Daniel 11:37 reads, “He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all” (NASB). The fact that the Antichrist will “show no regard for . . . the desire of women” leads some to believe that the Antichrist will be gay/homosexual.

The question is what is meant by “the desire of women”? Is it referring to a desire for women, or is it referring to something that women desire? Either is a possible translation of the Hebrew text. If “desire for women” is the proper understanding, the Antichrist’s forsaking of it could be an indication that he will be gay/homosexual. But, if “something women desire” is the proper understanding, the phrase would point in a different direction entirely.

While the NASB, KJV, and NKJV translate the phrase as “the desire of women,” other translations render it differently.

The NIV and ESV translate the phrase as “for the one desired by women” (NIV) and “to the one beloved by women” (ESV). If this rendering is correct, Daniel 11:37 is saying that the Antichrist will show no regard for “something/someone women love.”

The NLT and CSB translate the phrase as “for the god loved by women” (NLT) and “the god desired by women” (CSB). If this rendering is correct, Daniel 11:37 is saying that the Antichrist will not regard the “gods of his father, or the god desired by women, or any other god.”

Essentially, the NIV, ESV, NLT, and CSB all agree that the phrase is referring to “something that women desire,” with the NIV and ESV leaving the something unidentified, while the NLT and CSB identify the something as the “gods” the Antichrist will forsake. This rendering likely makes the most sense. The Antichrist will forsake all gods because he will essentially view himself as God: “He will magnify himself above them all.”

Further, contextually, it would be strange for Daniel 11:37 to insert a reference to homosexuality, especially in such an unclear way. For Daniel 11:37 to say that the Antichrist will be gay, it would have to read something like, “He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers, and he will lie with men as one does with women . . .” In all likelihood, Daniel would have been more specific about the sexual orientation of the Antichrist if that’s what he was trying to convey.

So, while the Antichrist’s showing no regard for “the desire of women” could indicate that he will be gay/homosexual, that is not the only possible interpretation of Daniel 11:37, and it is definitely not the most plausible interpretation.

Two scenes from the past two weeks capture something unsettling – and familiar –about American public life. In San Francisco, a tech billionaire delivered a sold‑out, off‑the‑record lecture series on the antichrist. In Michigan, a man rammed his pickup truck into a Latter‑day Saints meetinghouse during Sunday worship, opened fire and set the building ablaze, apparently believing that Mormons are the antichrist.

The antichrist is clearly back. But perhaps he has never really left.

As a historian of American apocalypticism, I’ve traced how this symbol – a protean figure cobbled together from obscure biblical passages – has repeatedly migrated from pulpits to politics and back again.

Almost a century ago, fundamentalists mapped European dictators and New Deal bureaucrats on to biblical prophecy. During the cold war, evangelicals scanned Moscow and Jerusalem for signs of the Beast. In the first Gulf war, some Christians argued that Saddam Hussein was the antichrist who was rebuilding the Tower of Babel.

Whenever American power felt threatened or social change accelerated, antichrist talk surged. Today’s version arrives with AI, deepfakes and venture funding. And with bullets.

Peter Thiel’s “Antichrist” lectures, consisting of four sessions organized by the ACTS 17 Collective, were marketed as explorations of “the theology, history, literature, and politics of the Antichrist”. Tickets sold out. Reports and attenders who shared details with the media and online say Thiel warns that fear of technological progress and especially efforts to regulate AI could become the pretext for a charismatic power to centralize control in the name of “peace and safety”, a scenario he threads to New Testament warnings. One attender reported that Thiel went further, likening anti‑tech sentiment itself to the work of the antichrist.

Others have traced the same themes in Thiel’s recent interviews. This summer he suggested that an antichrist of our age would present as a humanitarian regulator – he even floated Greta Thunberg as an analogy – arguing that fixation on “existential risk” can be a gateway to consolidating authority. Thiel claims that warnings about Armageddon may seduce elites into empowering a one‑world administrative order, which is the very thing apocalyptic texts have long seemingly foretold.

The lectures have drawn scrutiny not only because of the content but because of the context. Notes from the first session leaked online before they were taken down; the attender who posted them was barred from the remaining talks. Meanwhile, protests outside highlighted the tension between a lecture on end‑times authoritarianism and the speaker’s stake in real‑world surveillance tools. (Thiel’s champions counter that AI anxiety, not AI itself, is the highway to the antichrist – a view that, whatever one thinks of it theologically, conveniently aligns with Silicon Valley’s anti‑regulatory instincts.)

I do not doubt Thiel’s interest in Christian ideas. He draws on serious sources. But dressing political theory in apocalyptic robes carries risks. When powerful actors reframe ordinary policy debates such as about guardrails for AI as a battle against the antichrist, they raise anxieties, delegitimize compromise and insinuate that democratic deliberation is spiritually suspect.

Whatever Thiel may believe, the “mark of the beast” does not live in the Federal Register.

Then, just this past week, 40‑year‑old Thomas Jacob Sanford drove a flag‑festooned pickup through the front of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints meetinghouse, fired multiple rounds into the congregation, and used gasoline to start a fire. Four worshipers were killed and eight injured; Sanford died in a shootout with officers.

As investigators work through motive and means, a troubling detail has emerged. A local city council candidate who had spoken with Sanford a week earlier recalled a tirade against Latter‑day Saints during which Sanford declared that Mormons were “the antichrist”.

Labelling neighbors “antichrist” is not simply an insult; in this very Protestant American culture, it marks the enemy of God and humanity, the architect of persecution, the final deceiver. Once your opponents become eschatological villains, the normal habits of politics and pluralism feel like complicity with evil. In extreme cases, violence begins to look sanctifying.

Americans have repeatedly reached for the antichrist to make sense of social disruption and geopolitical dread. During the 1930s, some Christians mapped Mussolini, Stalin and Hitler on to prophecy charts and then read Franklin Roosevelt’s growing administrative state through the same lens. In the 1970s and ’80s, the oil crisis, detente, and the Iranian Revolution revived antichrist talk on radio programs and in runaway bestsellers. After 9/11, anxiety about terror networks and nuclear proliferation resurrected the motif yet again.

The symbol is elastic. For a century, Christian apocalypticists have alternated between expecting a singular charismatic ruler and warning that a globalized administrative order, often buttressed by new technologies, could institutionalize the Beast’s control. That’s why a four‑part antichrist seminar hosted at a tech hub and a gunman railing against an antichrist church can coexist without contradiction. The word itself is a vocabulary for fear – a way of translating the headlines of the day into a cosmic drama that explains who we are and what we must do.

Three currents are converging and as a result we are likely to see more Antichrist talk and action. First, technology really does feel apocalyptic. AI systems collapse time and space, digest private life and promise both miracles and mischief. It’s unsurprising that Silicon Valley’s most famous contrarian wants to set the theology of the antichrist against the politics of AI regulation.

Second, institutions are brittle. Trust in media, universities, churches and government is low. In such periods, apocalyptic binaries flourish. They offer certainty, heroes and villains. They also make it easier to justify bending rules in the name of rescue.

Third, the American tradition of naming enemies as “antichrist” is a proven mobilizer. It corrals attention, consolidates factions, and gives a transcendent sheen to temporal fights.

Rather than fuel this fire, politicians, ministers, and tech leaders should stop baptizing their agendas in apocalyptic waters. It is one thing to warn about genuine dangers and argue for or against regulation. It is quite another to imply that one’s opponents are enlistments in the armies of the Beast. A democracy cannot function if routine governance is reimagined as tribulation.

The late modern west has no monopoly on antichrist thinking. What’s notable about this moment is not simply that antichrist talk is back, but that it is coming from all ends of our social spectrum: from a sealed room on the Embarcadero and from a burning church in Michigan.

The stakes are not theoretical. In San Francisco, the antichrist was a thought experiment about governance and technology. In Grand Blanc, antichrist became the curse that prefaced a massacre.

Apocalyptic language has always helped some Americans to feel they know where history is headed. They use the Bible’s most cryptic passages to explain the past, understand the present and predict a future in which they prevail. In the end they vanquish all of their enemies and receive their just reward.

But it can also push a nation toward the very nightmares it imagines. If we want to keep politics human and humane, we should retire the antichrist from our debates and leave the Beast in Revelation – where he belongs.

Here is what Mrs. Meriqua Whyte wrote ten years ago after verbally apologizing to the entire family on Father’s Day, right before church service:

Over thirty years of marriage. Over thirty years of ups and downs. Over thirty years of trying to make our problems a personal thing between my husband and me. Thankfully, he did not allow me to do that and kept telling me it was between God and me—over thirty years of acting on my feelings and not on what the Bible says. Over thirty years of refusing to obey God’s simple command to a wife—to be obedient to your husband in all things. Over thirty years of disobedience, rebelliousness, stubbornness, lying, and dishonesty, all rooted in pride. Over thirty years of simply not choosing to mature as a Christian.

God has been dealing with me for over thirty years now about changing my attitude and behavior as a wife, which has manifested itself in disobedience, rebelliousness, stubbornness, lying, dishonesty, having an ungodly attitude and spirit, and simply not being the wife, mother, or example of a Christian woman that I should have been throughout the years. (By the way, for those of you who may be thinking that my disobedience, rebelliousness, stubbornness, lying, and dishonesty have resulted in adultery, I will say here that I have never committed any adultery or had sex with another man besides my husband, Daniel Whyte III, since I was born.)

God kept telling me I needed to stop my rebellious and stubborn behavior, apologize to my husband and children, and get my heart right with him, my husband, and my children. He sent others my way to tell me how to behave:

My husband, but I didn’t want to hear it from him
Other Christian women speakers
Other preachers
Books and other materials, but I would not take heed

I knew what to do, but I chose not to do it. The devil had me thinking and believing—as he is having a lot of wives and mothers think and believe—that your relationship with your husband and how you respond to him, whether positive or negative, will not affect your relationship with your children or your relationship with God. I say without hesitation that this is one of the devil’s lies, and sad to say, many wives and mothers are falling for this lie.

Another lie of the devil that Christian wives are falling for is that you can still have a strong relationship with God without being submissive to your husband. Lie! Lie! Lie! There is no truth to this. I know because I have experienced this and am still experiencing this as I am going through this breaking process, which is not happening overnight.

Even throughout my years of rebelliousness, stubbornness, and pride, I still kept praying the prayer I used to pray daily before I got married: “Lord, make me be exactly what You want me to be. Lord, break, make, and mold me into what you want me to be.” Well, God took that prayer seriously, and once you accept Him, He will begin the breaking process. It’s up to us how long that breaking process will take. For me, sad to say, it has taken over 30 years, and the breaking is not complete. In what way is God breaking me down right now? Well, our children have grown up. The three oldest have gone through and are still going through college, have gotten their degrees, and some are working on their second, third, and fourth degrees, launching their careers and moving out. God slapped me into reality and truly intensified the breaking process. My husband told me before our first child was born and repeatedly while the children were young that my job was to love our children and make positive memories with them and that if I did that, I would have a wonderful relationship with them as adults in the time to come. Well, I disobeyed God and my husband, who did not let up on his duties. And he has a wonderful relationship with our children, even the girls, and I don’t. However, God led me to finally break the day before Father’s Day, and while I was helping my husband get dressed to preach, I asked him if I could apologize to him and the entire family. That’s the first time I ever did that on my own. Throughout the years, he has always told me that I needed to get my heart right with God, him, and my children; otherwise, I would never have the joy and peace of the Lord in my life. However, I kept on lying and denying that I was the problem.

Here is what I said to my husband and children on Saturday afternoon, June 17, 2017, the day before Father’s Day. My husband told the entire family that this was the best Father’s Day gift I have ever given to him:

“Daddy, children, I apologize for not being the wife, mother, and example of a Christian woman I should have been throughout the years. I have shown nothing but pride, disobedience, rebelliousness, stubbornness, and a bad attitude and spirit toward God and my husband in front of you. My disobedience and rebelliousness have caused much unnecessary unrest and upheaval in the family. As my husband told me, things could have gone much better if I had obeyed God’s word from the beginning. Please accept my apology, and I am asking you to forgive me.”

The diminishing of peace and joy in my life throughout the years I brought on myself. Not having a proper relationship with God, my husband, and my children, I brought on myself—all because I chose the disobedient route. My number one desire is to live a life of peace—peace with God, my husband, and my children. I have learned that peace will not come as long as I live in disobedience, rebelliousness, stubbornness, and pride.

I will end this with two notes: (1) Happy Father’s Day to my husband: you have been a great husband and father. (2) Happy Children’s Day to my children: You all have been great children. I have no complaints whatsoever against my husband and, of course, children; you have never been at fault. My bad behavior is all on me, and I’m sorry I put you through this. May God bless your lives, and I love you.

The Gospel in a Nutshell

If you were to die today, where would you go: Heaven or Hell? If you’re not sure, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”

The Most Important Question in the World: Have You Been Twice Born?

This is the “Chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, with the Gospel Light Minute X Podcast #447, titled, “The Big Question.” I’m here to remind you of what the Bible says: that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

“Have You Been Born Again?”

The question is not, “Have you joined a church?” or “Are you trying to do your best?” or “Do you have religion?” but, “Are you twice-born?” Jesus Christ said in John 3:3, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

We enter the physical world by birth. Spiritual life, likewise, is entered with a birth. We become members of a human family by birth; we become members of the family of God by birth, by being “born again.” There is no other way to get into the human family except by birth, and there is no other way to get into God’s family except by the new birth. Neither education, nor cultivation, nor reformation, nor “turning over a new leaf,” will accomplish this. What is needed is not a new “leaf” but a new “life”! “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

A New Nature Needed

By physical birth, we become partakers of human nature; by being born again, we become “partakers of the divine nature.” A Christian is the product of a divine “begetting.” The second birth is not an improvement of the old nature; it is the imparting of an entirely new nature. The old nature is hopelessly corrupt and incapable of ever being made fit for His presence. The new birth requires a creative act of the Holy Spirit. “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”

Not “Trying” But “Trusting”

“Trying to follow Christ” is not Christianity. Christianity is not imitation of Christ; it is the indwelling of Christ. Christianity is not trying to do anything. It is trusting Christ, who has done it all! He has “finished the work,” and there is nothing left to do but simply to receive and trust Him. He shed His precious blood on the cross, and the work is all done once and forever! Cease trying and begin trusting! Believers will progressively become more and more like Christ, but by His power, not their own.

What Must I Do To Be Saved?

Simply “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” The Bible says in 1 John 5:1, “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.” The Bible states in John 1:12-13, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

You are born again, you become a Christian by trusting a Person—receiving a Person. The very moment you do this, the Lord Jesus Christ comes in and life begins!

What Is Meant By “Believe”?

To “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” means more than simply believing the historic facts concerning Him. Intellectual belief about Christ is not sufficient. The belief that brings salvation must be “with the heart,” that is, with the whole being. This belief also includes repentance: “Repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” The Bible states in Acts 17:30, “God… now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.”

The faith which saves, then, includes the necessity to repent and to receive Christ as Savior and Lord, to rest upon Him alone for salvation. It means to trust Him so utterly and completely that, if He should fail, there would be no hope at all!

May I Know That I Am Born Again?

This is an important question. We know that we are born again by the testimony of God’s Word. God says in John 5:24, “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Have you believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as explained by God’s Word? If so, then you are saved, you are “born again,” you have “passed from death unto life.” God says so! Take God at His Word, and go on your way rejoicing!

One Final Word

You may “belong to a church,” you may be “trying to do the best you can,” you may be “striving to live right.” Your outward life may be the model of moral correctness, and you may be looked up to, honored, revered, and respected. Yet, if you have not been “born again,” you are just as lost as if you had never heard of Christ. Yes, you may teach in the Sunday school, read the Bible, sing, shout, “feel happy,” and all the rest—but if you have never been “born again,” you are still in your sins and a stranger to the Lord Jesus Christ.

If you want to be saved from the wrath to come and from an eternity in Hell, and if you believe that Jesus Christ suffered, bled, and died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again from the dead, and you are willing to trust Jesus Christ with all of your heart so you can go to Heaven, please pray with me what is called the sinner’s prayer:

Holy Father God, I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I admit that I have sinned against You and that I have broken Your Ten Commandments. I have lied before. I have stolen things before. I have lusted after people and things before. I have dishonored and disobeyed my parents. I have taken Your holy Name in vain. For Jesus Christ’s sake, please have mercy and grace upon my soul and forgive me of all of my sins, my failures, and my faults. As I now believe in Your Holy Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe that He suffered, bled, and died on the cross for my sins, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me to repent of my sins past. Help me to turn from my old, evil life and follow You in the new life. For it is in Your Name I pray. Amen.
