I can be changed by what happens to me, but I refuse to be reduced by it.” — Maya Angelou.
I want to say this upfront. I believe Shamika. Her fight for justice impressed me. The lack of response from the National Baptist Convention-associated pastors is stunning.
A difficult start to Shamika Lawrence Caldwell’s life
Shamika Caldwell (nee Lawrence) faced a difficult life as a child and teen. She told me she had been abused in every conceivable way. She was explicitly sexually abused by family members, starting at three years old. When her cousin molested her, she told her mother. Her mother told her to “not be fast.” Her father was a deacon but didn’t act “fatherly.” He had relationships with several young women. Her mother remarried, but her stepfather was not kind or helpful to her.
She said she knew Jesus, but her life was so difficult. She said something that seared into my soul. She had been so abused that she just stopped caring. She was merely looking for love, safety, and what she called “normal.” She wouldn’t get “normal” for a long time.
I just feel like my whole life was my fault in some way because I was always blamed or not believed.
Unfortunately, life got even more challenging for her. It was her senior year in high school. She had a 37-year-old boyfriend who went to prison. Life was hard.
It was my senior year of high school and I was in and out of school because I was getting in trouble for fighting, skipping school, trouble at home with my step father, and staying in the streets, and health issues where I was in and out the hospital.
What happened next would change her life for the worse. Her mother became concerned about her life choices. She had met a pastor with whom she thought Shamika might like to talk. His name was Terrance Lamont Holder, and he was the pastor of Mt. Emory Baptist Church in Illinois, where they lived at the time.
I visit church one Sunday with my mom and she introduced me to him we talked and he seemed cool so he told me my mom wanted him to counsel me and get to the bottom of my anger issues and things that happened in my childhood. I agreed and we decided to set a time to meet during a woman’s meeting because I lived in Springfield and they were in Jacksonville.
Seventeen-year-old Shamika met Pastor Terrance Lamont Holder, looking for help, and, instead, was molested.
So Shamika, 17 years old, looking for faith and love, decided to meet with Dr. Holder. What happened next would make her despair, and I seriously say that. I am quoting exactly, so be prepared.
So I dropped my mom off at my cousin’s house for Women’s night and I went to the church to meet Pastor Holder. We talked. My mom had already shared a lot with him. I told him my current situation my boyfriend was 37 years old and had just got out of prison. He was on house arrest and was threatening that if I left him he would kill me and him.
Pastor Holder assured me, “That nigga ain’t gonna do nothing he’s just trying to put fear in you. I ain’t going to let anything happen to you.
Then some how we started talking about my sex life and the things I do sexually. Long story short he challenged me because I told him that ive never had a complaint sexually because i was taught early what to do and how to do since i was 3
Regular TWW readers probably know where this is going. This, at the minimum, is clergy abuse.
I explained to Shamika that, in the eyes of the law, oral sex is considered sexual molestation just as full intercourse is. She thought they were different.
I ended up giving him oral sex in his office at the church.
She thought Holder might actually care for her.
Due to her past, she began to believe that he cared for her. But Shamika said she became sick “almost to the point of death.” She sought help from the hospitals, but they said there was nothing they could do for her and sent her home. She had nowhere to go, so she went back to her abusive boyfriend’s home. She stayed away from the church for a while, but thinking Holder cared for her, she decided to return and join his church.
The relationship would become sexual. In the meantime, she worked on finding housing for herself, relying on friends in the short term. Holder claimed to have “no remorse.” He “had to have it.”
I called my mom to pick me up for church because I just couldn’t live this type of life anymore. So, while my 37 year old boyfriend was gone to his parents house I left and never returned. I went to church with my mother and told her I was going to join church. Pastor Holder forgot to ask at the end of service was there anyone that wanted to join church. So my mom told him my baby wanted to join church he said she can join at the next service in Quincy. We had to go to his Father in laws church for their anniversary.
A few days later he called me and wanted to meet me somewhere. I was living in Springfield so he met me. I ended up leaving my vehicle which was a red grand am to get into his silver Aurora. We went way out in the country by a place called Loame that’s where we first had sex.
She began to realize that Holder had wronged her.
Two years passed, and she realized that this relationship with Holder did not bring her the love and safety she sought. She changed her number and made changes to her life. She had her own place and left the church. She started dating a minister who eventually committed suicide. Shamika was devastated and hanging on by a thread, but she believed she was free of Holder.
In 2018, he contacted her on Messenger. She blocked him. She had many hard times and experienced other abusive relationships. But she carried on.
She is now married and has a “Brady Bunch” family consisting of seven kids in a melded family. She is a Certified Nursing Assistant and an assistant teacher. She is now a Pentecostal and still believes in Jesus, which is evident when I speak with her. She kindly prayed for my bout with COVID.
She never forgot and sought justice from church leaders who did nothing.
It wasn’t until Shamika clawed her way to love and normalcy that she realized what happened to her when she was 17 was wrong. She didn’t know that oral sex was considered sexual molestation. She understood she was groomed when she was seeking help.
I have all of her messenger notes…
Where is Dr Terrance Lamont Holder located today?
Terrance Lamont Holder has gone onto the historic (1878) Calvary Baptist Church in Wichita, Kansas, where he serves four generations of worshipers. Oddly enough, he has been an advisor to the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center.
Other evidence suggests that Holder admits to his liaisons with Shamika and does not appear ashamed.
Who did Shamika contact?
None of these listed offered to help her in her quest for justice.
Bishop Mark Gilkey: 2 messages, which means he knows.

LOL. Well .Yes. What wa on your mind.
Cherrie Holder: I struggled with this. She did respond, stating she was aware of some “past disappointments,” but I do not feel comfortable saying more.

I contacted the following people/organizations and did not receive return calls. If any of the folks below would like to contact me, please get in touch with me at dee@thewartburgwatch.com. I will post any statements.

- Dr. Jerry Young: New Hope Baptist Church and apparent head of the National Baptist Convention.
No one, not one of those who supposedly shepherd the shepherds, bothered to respond! I suppose it is easy to throw away one woman who had a hard life. How many other women have come forward?

Finally
This is a story of an impoverished, abused teen in trouble who tried to reach out for help and, instead, was molested by the pastor. I don’t know anything about the National Baptist Convention, but I have a suggestion. They need to develop a sexual abuse policy. They must return the calls of those harmed by pastors in their organization. Any pastor who molests a member of their congregation should be booted from the denomination. They have turned in their pastor credentials. I suspect the boys protect their version of celebrity pastors at the top. All of them should hang their heads in shame. They are supposed to be shepherds, but, in this instance, it appears they are dancing with wolves.
