Thur, Sept 21, 2017: Trump meets with S. Korean president, bashes trade agreement

President Trump on Thursday bashed the five-year-old trade agreement between the United States and South Korea while sitting next to that nation’s president, Moon Jae-in.

Trump, who earlier this month threatened to withdraw from the U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, said that, besides discussing North Korea’s growing nuclear threat, the two leaders would address nagging trade issues.

“So because of the fact that our trade deal is so bad for the United States and so good for South Korea, I said we’ll focus on the military, but actually we’re going to try to straighten it out and make it fair for everybody,” Trump said while sitting next to Moon ahead of their meeting.

“But our real focus will be on the military and our relationship with South Korea, which is excellent,” he said.

Trump’s plan to withdraw from the free trade agreement with South Korea was met with backlash from agriculture and other business groups and pushback from within the White House.

President Trump on Friday denounced the “reckless and brutal” regime in North Korea and demanded that Pyongyang choose “a better path” to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula over its nuclear weapons program.

Appearing in the Rose Garden with new South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump pledged a “determined response” to the threat and renewed calls for regional allies and powers to implement stronger economic sanctions on Pyongyang, a day after his administration sanctioned a Chinese bank over allegations that it laundered money for North Korean companies.

“Our goal is peace, stability and prosperity for the region,” Trump said in a prepared statement. “But the United States will defend itself, always will defend itself — always. And we will always defend our allies.”

Trump said at the start of a formal dinner with South Korean President Moon Jae-in that they would discuss North Korea and trade over two days of meetings. The South Korean leader has sought to make clear to the US that he is serious about dealing with his neighbor’s threat, despite having long advocated engagement with North Korea to address its nuclear weapons development.

“I know you’ve been discussing with our people some of the complexities of North Korea and trade and other things, and we’ll be discussing them all as we progress,” Trump told Moon in the State Dining Room. “And it could be very well late into the evening.” Continue reading “Thur, June 29, 2017: Trump welcomes South Korean President Moon Jae-In to White House”
