Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigns over travel controversy

President Donald Trump’s health secretary resigned Friday, after his costly travel triggered investigations that overshadowed the administration’s agenda and angered his boss. Tom Price’s regrets and partial repayment couldn’t save his job.

The Health and Human Services secretary became the first member of the president’s Cabinet to be pushed out in a turbulent young administration that has seen several high-ranking White House aides ousted. A former GOP congressman from the Atlanta suburbs, Price served less than eight months.

Publicly, Trump had said he was “not happy” with Price for repeatedly using private charter aircraft for official trips on the taxpayer’s dime, when cheaper commercial flights would have done in many cases. President Donald Trump on Friday addressed a meeting of the National Association of Manufacturers in Washington and declared that “the era of economic surrender is over.”

Trump said the newly released Republican tax reform plan would result in the “rebirth of American industry.”

Speaking before a friendly and enthusiastic audience of business owners and CEOs, the president touted what he called “a giant, beautiful, massive, the-biggest-ever-in-our-country, tax cut” for businesses, that he said is at the center of his economic revival plan. First lady Melania Trump fired back Friday at a Massachusetts elementary school librarian who rejected her donation of Dr. Seuss books, claiming their illustrations are examples of “racist propaganda.”

Thur, Sept 28, 2017: Trump waives restrictions on foreign cargo deliveries to speed aid to Puerto Rico

On the defensive over the pace of federal help for Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans cleared the way Thursday for more supplies and government cash for the hurricane-ravaged U.S. island.

Trump waived federal restrictions on foreign ships delivering cargo. And House Speaker Paul Ryan said the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account will get a $6.7 billion boost by the end of the week. Trump and his advisers, meanwhile, defended the administration’s response to the devastation on the island, which was hit by Hurricane Maria Sept. 20 with many people left desperate for power, food and other supplies. Wed, Sept 27, 2017: In Indiana, Trump promises ‘revolutionary change’ to tax code

President Trump promised Wednesday to bring “revolutionary change” to the federal tax code that will help the middle class — and not the wealthy.

“They can call me all they want. It’s not going to help,” Trump said of the well-to-do in a speech in Indianapolis. “I’m doing the right thing. And it’s not good for me, believe me.”

What would help both the country and his own legacy, Trump said, is when the economy “takes off like a rocket ship” after business taxes are dramatically cut.

The tax changes he outlined are the basis for a plan jointly agreed to with Republican congressional leaders. But Congress still has to fill in many important details before bringing to a vote legislation Trump hopes to sign before the end of the year.
