There are only so many hours in the day, and no matter your work ethic or intellectual capacity, you will always have another project you could be doing. Many business owners struggle to delegate because they like to do everything themselves. Small business owners tend to micromanage tasks, which only takes more time on your end. Effective delegation requires you to learn what employees are good at and what their weaknesses are. It’s a good idea to have checks and balances in place, but you should also take a step back and focus on other tasks while your employee’s work. You can check in every now and then, but you don’t have to be in control all the time. It requires trust in your team of employees that they will get their tasks done but allows you to facilitate partnerships and collaboration amongst your team members.
You are more productive if you are focused on one thing for a long time instead of trying to juggle multiple tasks throughout the day. One way of accomplishing this is by batching similar tasks so you can focus on the whole batch at once. Perhaps you only go through emails at the beginning and end of each work day. It’s easy to let repetitive tasks bog you down. However, you might be able to automate many of the most frequent tasks. You might be concerned about the effect on employee jobs or the expenses, but automating can save you from repetitive steps in the distribution, sales, and production process. This ultimately increases your bottom line, allowing employees to work on more critical tasks.
Don’t be Afraid of Change
If things are running all right, it can be tempting to become complacent. However, complacency in the workplace is something that can spread to other employees, especially if it starts at the top. You represent your organization’s culture, so you should be willing to change ideas, processes, or anything else that needs it. If you do not, employees will not embrace change either. If you are stagnant, you may fall behind the competition if you are challenged by changes in demands or economic trends. Preparing for changes allows you to adapt as soon as it becomes necessary.
