South Carolina Woman Says She Was Turned Away from Nail Spa Due to Her Weight

Ashley Cheffen has been patronizing POSH Nail Spa II in Columbia, South Carolina since she moved to the area in 2018, with no issues. So, when she went in for a routine pedicure on June 18, she didn’t expect anything different.

“I went and it was pretty busy, and I sat in the waiting area for fifteen to twenty minutes, which is expected on a Friday night,” said Cheffen.

Unfortunately, Cheffen says things turned upside down out of nowhere. A nail technician sat her down in a spa chair and even started preparing her toes for the pedicure and then stopped. Shortly after, she says the receptionist walked over to her.

“She said mam, unfortunately, [the nail technician] is not going to be able to continue your service. We’re not going to be able to finish your pedicure because of the weight limit of the chair,” Cheffen recounted.

The nail salon’s policy states that a customer may be held responsible if a spa chair malfunctions – if the customer’s weight is over 300 pounds. However, there is no mention of refusal of service. In fact, POSH Nail Spa’s owners tell WACH News that “they don’t turn anyone away.”

“When I left, I sat in my car, and I had a moment. I broke down,” Cheffen said. “I was embarrassed. I was humiliated, and I felt horrible.”
