People wishing to dine or drink indoors at Union Square Hospitality Group’s restaurants will be required to show that they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Danny Meyer, CEO of the group and founder of the popular Shake Shack franchise, made the announcement Thursday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” saying the mandate also applies to current and future employees.
“This is the most logical thing I’ve ever seen,” Meyer said. “I’m not a scientist, but I know how to read data and what I see is that this is a crisis of people who have not been vaccinated, and I feel strong responsibility, on our part as business leaders, to take care of our team and our guests, and that’s what we’re doing.”
Meyer, whose company has a number of well-known restaurants in New York City and Washington, said the policy would not extend to Shake Shack and that the franchise would implement its own policy. Following the announcement, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted that the city “fully supports this move.”
