We Have an Adversary
When Bianca got to her office later that evening she made a note of the conversation she and Shukla Kumar had had in what she called her ‘unofficial files,’ the folder she created for those who sought her advice outside of a formal counseling session just in case they chose to come in for formal counseling later.
“I believe Shukla is going to take heed to what I shared with her,” she told her husband. “She has a teachable spirit.”
“I believe that is part of the reason husbands and wives are having so many problems,” Franklin said. “They have never been taught their roles in marriage. I really don’t know what kind of pre-marital counseling or marital counseling pastors are giving out these days, but they need to get down to where the rubber meets the road and tell the husband you are in charge, sir, and you have to take that role seriously and carry it out with love. You cannot be lackadaisical about it because when you stand before the judgment seat of Christ you’re going to have to give a report on how you led your household. And you want to give a good report.”
“Exactly,” Bianca said. “And likewise to the wife. The pastor or the pastor’s wife or whoever is counseling her must tell her that she has a submissive role, and if before she gets married she knows deep down that she is going to have a problem obeying her husband in everything, then she does not need to proceed with the wedding only to end up giving that man all kinds of heartache. If she is already married, she just needs to settle down in her submissive role and all should go well with and for her.”
“That’s right,” Franklin said. “One husband shared with me that before he and his wife got married he told her they were going to do it God’s way or no way because if they did not do it God’s way they would not have a marriage. He said that if either of them did not do it God’s way all bets were off, meaning, not only would there be broken fellowship between them, but between them and God, and God would not bless the marriage like He wants to.”
“I wish all husbands had that mentality and stuck with it,” Bianca said. “Is it always going to be pretty? No. Is it always going to be smooth sailing? Absolutely not. Why? Because we have an adversary called Satan the devil who will not give up causing problems in Christian marriages, and the sad thing is, many Christian husbands and wives do not take him seriously.”
“You just said a mouthful,” Franklin said. “Many Christians don’t realize that the marriage relationship is a picture of the relationship between Christ and His bride, the Church. If a Christian marriage is tight and right, oh, what a testimony it is before the world. That’s why Satan seeks to cause division between husbands and wives. He wants them to get a divorce and so destroy that wonderful picture and testimony.”
“I often wonder why in the book of Ephesians chapters five and six, in particular, immediately after Paul addresses the wife, then the husband, then the children and then the servants, if a family has servants, that he launches into a detailed warning about our enemy the devil,” Bianca said.
“That’s because husbands and wives make the negativities and problems of their marriage personal. The husband accuses the wife and the wife accuses the husband and they both get into defense mode not realizing that it is the devil who is sticking his monstrous head in their marriage and causing the division between them. What does Paul say? ‘Be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.’ The devil has blinded the eyes of husbands and wives to that truth, but if couples would only get a hold of that truth, if they would see who is really the cause of division in their marriage then they would stop pointing the finger, stop playing the blame game, and stop taking things personally, realizing it is the devil behind it all. They would reconcile and just trust God.”
