Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

– Philippians 4:6-7

Aubrey was quiet on the way home from Prayer Meeting. She had been nearly a half hour late, and that really ticked her off so much that she could hardly enjoy the services. Mother Jamison and Simone noticed her unusual quietness, but said nothing about it.

“Okay, Aubrey,” Simone said entering her bedroom before they retired for the night. “Spill it! What happened between you and Roger?”

“Oh, we kind of parted on a sour note,” Aubrey sighed. “To sum it all up: one, he does not see the importance of prayer; two, he is beginning to question God; three, because I am ‘his girl,’ I must be available whenever he wants me.”

Simone wanted to say I told you, but knew that would not help. “Tell me exactly what happened and please do not leave anything out.”

Aubrey complied, leaving out the drugs she saw in the bag.

“So he wants you as his little puppet. Remember what you told the single ladies when you spoke with them? ‘Some of us get so wrapped up in a man we lose all sense of reality.’ Aubrey, you need to stop and look at where you two are headed in this relationship. Things seem to be happening too fast and, quite frankly, too wrong, if you ask me,” Simone said. “I mean you really do not know what he was up to while he was in Florida. It seems to me he got entangled with the wrong crowd, or he’s mingling with the wrong crowd now.”

“You’re right,” Aubrey agreed. “I’ve never really questioned him much about his years in Florida, and I do not know his circle of friends either.”

“Tell me this,” Simone said, “why do you really want to go out with Roger? You’ve got to have a reason.”

“You know I have never really thought about it.” After a few seconds, Aubrey replied, “I just miss the crazy off-the-wall things Jamaal used to do, so I guess I want a man to add some excitement to my life; to keep me laughing all the time, and Roger has done that for the most part. And, girl, I think I’m ready to start having sex again. I really miss that part of my life. As you know, once you are not a virgin any more and once you have been married to a man for a while like I was with Jamaal, that desire to have sex is stronger. So, you pray with me about that.”

“I thought the Lord was adding enough excitement to your life?” Simone said. “You’ve always given me the impression that He does.”

“Yes, but…”

“Yes, but you’re looking for something else,” Simone finished her statement for her.

“I’m afraid so,” Aubrey said. “But, the truth of the matter is, I want both.”

“You know something,” Simone replied, “I’ve experienced life with Kelvin without the Lord, and now I am experiencing life with the Lord. Like you, I wanted to hang on to Kelvin for all the wrong reasons—some of them, the same reasons you gave. But now that I know the Lord, I must say, you’re wanting a man for the wrong reasons as well.”

“What else is there to want a man for?” Aubrey asked. “I mean, Jesus takes care of all of our spiritual needs; but we need someone to take care of some other needs.”

Simone sighed. “Aubrey, I can’t believe I am the one saying this, but like I said, you want a man for all the wrong reasons. You should want a man to glorify God first, to pray with you, and to help you spiritually, and then, as Jesus said in Matthew, all the other things will be added unto you. In fact, isn’t that what you told me once before? I am a little jealous towards Kelli and Jennifer—they both have a man who prays with them and for them. I am secretly praying for a man who will pray with me and who I can lean on spiritually. I guess Kelvin just wasn’t the one.”

“Yeah,” Aubrey said thoughtfully. “I guess I do need a man who will join me in putting God first, and who will also pray with me and for me.”

The next morning, Mother Jamison dittoed Simone’s words to Aubrey and added her words of wisdom.

“You know God has a sense of humor. By that I mean, if you fail in a situation, or if you make a wrong decision, or if you choose the disobedient route, God will put you right back in a similar situation to see if you will pass the test the second time. And He’ll repeat that test as often as necessary. God has all the time in the world, child. The problem is we don’t.”

“I don’t quite get it,” Aubrey said.

“I believe you got it,” her mother said. “Anyway, from what you have shared with me, and from what I have observed from your phone call conversations with Roger, I see a lot of Jamaal in him, meaning, he has that same controlling streak in him that smacks of disrespect. He does not even come to the door when he picks you up, at least to show me, as your mother, some respect. And there you go, running your tail out to him allowing him to disrespect both of us.”

Aubrey twisted her mouth as she thought on what her mother was sharing with her.

“Obviously you’re not fully sold out to God. Roger showing back up in your life is shedding light on the insecure part of you that comes out when you are around him. Always remember, Aubrey, someone said, ‘our heart is restless until it rests with God’; and right now, your heart is restless. Not only is your heart restless, but your body is restless, and your desire to have sex with a man is making you think and act silly. When you have that desire, you need to go take a cold shower and become a woman of the Word by reading the Word of God daily and by living by God’s Word and not your feelings, your emotions, and your sexual impulses. Other women have done it and you can do it too. And, in fact, the best way to get a man, keep a man, enjoy a man, and have your freedom too, is to become a virtuous woman who is guided by the Word of God and not your feelings, your emotions, and your desires. When you become a woman like that, a man will move heaven and earth for you.”

Aubrey thought on her mother’s words as she went about her obligations that day. She had to admit that even Simone, for a young Christian, seemed to have a closer walk with God than she did. She sought the advice of Kelli and Jennifer regarding this matter.

“You know,” Kelli said, “I can say this without hesitation, and that is when I pray with Trevor, even over the phone, I feel secure and strengthened. There is something about having a strong Christian person to pray with you. And I know that you’re thinking that prayer and being spiritual will kill the sexual fire. But I am here to tell you, sister, that is far from the truth. Once you hook up with a spiritual man who is in touch with God, you will have the greatest sex of your life. Having that connection with God takes away a lot of the cares, worries, fears, and anxieties that most people in the world carry, and you can enjoy each other sexually often and more intensely.”

“Excuse me, girlfriends,” Aubrey said. “It’s getting hot in here.”  They all burst out laughing. “But, seriously, you all are really helping me today.”

“Everything is going to be alright,” Jennifer said. “We have been where you are and we’re going to pray you through this and walk with you through this. But you need to be reminded of what you already know, and that is: no man can make you happy, no man can totally fulfill the needs that you have in your life. Only God can do that. So you must put God first, and He’ll give you the man He wants you to have and everything else you’ll need. Be encouraged, baby, and be strong in the Lord.”

Now, dear listener, please know that God—the divine Author of all things—wants to write a great story with your life as well. But first you must give Him the pen by trusting Him with the life He gave you and surrendering your heart to Jesus Christ as Savior. Here is how:

  1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
  2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

  3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

  4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

  5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

  6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
