U.N. Chief Antonio Guterres is appealing to Israel and Gaza to put an end to the fighting as it could spill over its borders to “unleash an uncontainable security and humanitarian crisis and to further foster extremism,” not only in the Palestinian territory and Israel but also elsewhere in the region.

Guterres is urging both countries to step up mediation efforts. He has also reminded them of his commitment to support Palestine and Israel in resolving the conflict through so-called Quartet of Middle East mediators which includes the U.N., the U.S., the European Union, and Russia.
