Parishioners had just finished celebrating early morning mass at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Makassar, and were leaving to make room for a second group of worshippers when they heard a loud explosion.
According to the church’s security guards, they confronted two men on a motorcycle who wanted to enter the building when one of the men detonated his explosives. Both died instantly. One of the men turned out to be a woman. One of the attackers is tied to a church bombing in the Philippines.
Indonesia has been battling militant attacks since that in Bali in 2002.
