Fernando Tatis Jr. has agreed to one of the biggest deals in baseball history, a new 14-year contract with the San Diego Padres worth $340 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official.
The new contract goes into effect this season, meaning Tatis, 22, is under team control through 2035. He would have been a free agent after the 2024 season.
Tatis, one of baseball’s brightest young stars, has played two seasons in the major leagues, hitting .301 with 39 home runs and 98 RBIs in 143 games played. He hit 17 home runs in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season and helped the Padres reach the postseason.
