TEXT: 2 Peter 3:1-7
1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Warren Wiersbe said, “The Word of God is still a light that shines in a dark place. We can trust it. No matter what the scoffers may claim, God’s day of judgment will come on the world, and Jesus Christ shall return to establish His glorious kingdom.”
In our last message in this series, we saw how we can trust in Christ’s second coming because of the authority of God’s word. When scoffers come to mock the teaching of the second coming, we can find a firm foundation in the inspired, inerrant word of God that assures us that even as our Saviour came the first time, He will come again.
Second, we can trust in Christ’s second coming because of how God has acted in history. 2 Peter 3:3-6 says,” Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:” In these three verses we immediately see a prophecy that has been fulfilled. Peter warned that scoffers would come in the last days, and scoffers abound in our society. Charles Spurgeon said, “You need not go far to find them; they come in the form of living men, and they swarm in the form of their books. They are to be met with almost everywhere; like the locusts, they fill the air, and hide the light of the sun.” Everywhere, we see so-called Christians with unbiblical theology, atheistic and agnostic “science guys”, and of course those who hold to other religions, mocking creationism, disavowing the virgin birth, scoffing at the second coming, supporting immorality, and otherwise promulgating false doctrine and casting doubt on the authority of Scripture. Little do these scoffers know that their scoffing is itself a fulfilment of the signs that the Bible says will appear in the last days. A defining characteristic of the scoffers is that they are “walking after their own lusts.” People who want to continue committing their favorite sins do not want to believe in a future judgment where they will face the consequences. In 2 Peter 2:14-15, these people are described as “Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray.” These scoffers did not want to cease from sin, so in order to ease their guilty consciences, they saw that Jesus had not returned and started denying the second coming altogether. Because the earth has still gone on as God created it and humanity has continued to live they said that Jesus was not coming back. But they were willingly ignorant of how God created the world by His Word, and how the antediluvian world perished in the Flood. God spake the world into existence, as Psalm 33:9 says in reference to the creation, “For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.”, and just as He spake it into existence He can speak it out of existence. And just as in the days that were before the flood people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, people will be keep on living right up until Christ returns. Steven J. Cole said, “Peter’s point seems to be that water, the agent that God predominantly used in creation, is what He then used to judge the world in the flood. Peter is making the point that the mockers were ignoring the implications of the doctrine of God as Creator. The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the point that God created the world, including people. Therefore, He is the rightful Lord of His creation and the righteous Judge of those who do not submit to His lordship. “Which,” in Greek is a plural pronoun, referring to both God’s word and the water of the flood. How could the false teachers claim that everything has continued on just as it was from the beginning of creation when God directly intervened in the most catastrophic judgment in history? The lesson of the flood was that God intervened in history to judge the wicked, and thus He will again intervene. All who follow their own lusts and do not repent and submit their lives to the Lord and Savior will face Him when He comes again in judgment.”

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
