The Rev. Harper Shannon, a former president and evangelism director of the Alabama Baptist Convention and a retired pastor who led churches in Birmingham, Montgomery and Dothan, has died.
Shannon, 89, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, of complications related to dementia, the Alabama Baptist reported.
Shannon served as president of the state Baptist Convention from 1977-79. He retired in 1997 after serving 12 years as director of the office of evangelism for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.
Before that, he was pastor of Huffman Baptist Church in Birmingham. He previously served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Dothan; Eastern Hills Baptist Church in Montgomery; First Baptist Church of Ghent, Ky.; and Harmony Baptist (later First Baptist) Church of Pleasant Grove.
Shannon graduated from Samford University when it was still known as Howard College in East Lake. He was also a graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
