Dallas Stars’ and Mavericks’ Positive Coronavirus Tests Remind Us the Plague Isn’t Going Away Any Time Soon

We shouldn’t need any more reminders. We keep getting them and getting them, anyway.

The Stars provided one Friday morning, and the Mavericks delivered another Friday afternoon. The pandemic isn’t going away any time soon. Maybe you have been fortunate enough to receive the vaccine. Maybe — like me — you have registered for it and are anxiously awaiting your turn. All of that is good, but none of that matters in the larger scheme of things when it comes to the general population and the determination of sports leagues to do what they do.

The Stars’ announcement was a big one, and it came from the NHL office. Six players have tested positive and two more are in isolation. The team facility is shut down. The club’s first two games — scheduled to be held at Florida next Thursday and Friday — have been postponed.

There is no word yet as to which players tested positive. The home opener Jan. 22 may or may not be in jeopardy. Regardless it feels as though the club’s plan to play games in front of crowds of 5,000 at American Airlines Center is, at the very least, an ambitious one.

The Mavericks defeated Denver in overtime Thursday night but flew home Friday without three of their players. It has been reported that the team had one positive test and two more players held out for contact tracing. According to The News’ Brad Townsend, Luka Doncic was on the flight back, so he’s not one of the missing Mavs. Players who test positive, like former Maverick Seth Curry did in Philadelphia this week, must be quarantined for 10 days before they can resume team activities.
