White House coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx says she will retire after ‘overwhelming’ backlash over her out-of-state Thanksgiving trip when she ignored her own travel warning to meet with three generations of her family

Dr. Deborah Birx revealed she is planning to retire after facing ‘overwhelming’ criticism for ignoring her own public advice and traveling out of state to visit family over Thanksgiving weekend. The coordinator of the White House coronavirus response did not give a timetable for her retirement and said she is willing to first help President-elect Joe Biden’s team with its coronavirus response as needed. ‘I will be helpful in any role that people think I can be helpful in, and then I will retire,’ Birx told Newsy. Birx and White House officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Her comments came just days after The Associated Press reported that she traveled out of state for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend even as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was urging Americans to forgo holiday travel.
