Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #205. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is II Peter 2:1-3. It reads, “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from William Jennings Bryan. He said, “If the Bible had said that Jonah swallowed the whale, I would believe it.”
Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its inerrancy, infallibility and inspiration using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 2: “Beware of “Scholars” Who Do Not Believe the Bible Is God’s Word” Part 9.
6. Infidels in the Church and Out Are Alike Wicked
Tom Paine wrote the first edition of The Age of Reason while he was in prison in France. He plainly admitted that he wrote it without having a copy of the Bible or even a copy of the New Testament at hand, yet he foolishly said that he felt he had proved that the Bible was not reliable, was not the Word of God — a foolish, ignorant boast! Wicked, deceived heart! Why would any intelligent man think that the opinions of a profane, drunken man like Paine were important when he did not study the Bible itself, did not even have at hand a Bible to read when he set out to prove that the Bible was not true! And liberals in the churches, not as honest as Paine, though they are the same kind of infidels privately, are not to be counted good men and their words are not to be counted as wise. Their opinions are not to be regarded. Why? Because they are wicked men, intentionally deceiving, intentionally rejecting the light and trying to blind others to the light.
In a widely published letter, Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick said: “No, I do not believe in the virgin birth of Christ and I do not know an intelligent man who does.”
Had Dr. Fosdick really, honestly investigated this matter and found that no intelligent people believed in the virgin birth and other essentials of the Christian faith? Does he really believe that scholars like Robert Dick Wilson, Machen, Hodge, Warfield, and more recent, Allis of Princeton, all contemporary with him, were not intelligent men? Did he really check and find that R.A. Torrey, C.I. Scofield, William Jennings Bryan, and W.B. Riley, who all lived in his day, and many, many other great, scholarly, Christian men — did he really believe that these were not intelligent men? Winston Churchill openly and in print avowed his belief in all the Bible. But did Dr. Fosdick say that Churchill was not an intelligent man? The answer is obvious. Fosdick said what was not true and said it with deliberate intention to deceive. A Christ-rejecting, unconverted man is an enemy of the Bible and would deceive others.
Lord willing, we will continue this topic in our next episode.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
