Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #204. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is I Timothy 4:1-2. It reads, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.”
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from J.C. Ryle. He said, “Be very sure of this – people never reject the Bible because they cannot understand it. They understand it too well; they understand that it condemns their own behavior; they understand that it witnesses against their own sins, and summons them to judgment. They try to believe it is false and useless, because they don’t like to believe it is true.”
Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its inerrancy, infallibility and inspiration using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 2: “Beware of “Scholars” Who Do Not Believe the Bible Is God’s Word” Part 8.
4. Modernists, Liberals “Bring in Damnable Heresies” Privily, Through Covetousness
The Apostle Peter was inspired to write about such false prophets also.
“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.” —II Pet. 2:1-3
Examine that Scripture again. They “privily…bring in damnable heresies.” They do not openly, publicly announce their enmity for Christ and the Bible, but they deceive the people, “even denying the Lord that bought them.” Why do they do it? They do it “through covetousness.” And how? “With feigned words,” making merchandise of the people. So liberals in the churches, claiming to be Christians when they are not, claiming to speak as prophets of God when they represent Satan and not God, are enemies of the Bible and are wicked men, deceitful men.
5. Bible Deniers Are “Ungodly Men” Denying the Lord Jesus
The wickedness of unbelieving men is reproved in Jude 3 and 4:
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Note carefully what God says here: “The faith” is “the faith of the Gospel” of Philippians 1:27, the certain essential doctrines which are in the Gospel and the principal doctrines of Christianity. We must contend for this faith. Why? These men who oppose the faith are “ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.” They may say nice words about Jesus, but they do not believe His deity, they do not worship Him as God, they do not trust Him as Saviour.
Many times in the Bible there are references to such unbelieving enemies of the Bible who claim to be Christians. Titus was commanded to ‘hold fast the faithful word,’ to stop the mouths of vain talkers and deceivers who teach falsely “for filthy lucre’s sake” (Titus 1:9-11). In II John 9-11 we are told, “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.” Notice, they transgress in not accepting the Bible doctrine about Christ in the Bible and such people are not to be received in our houses, not to be bidden Godspeed or counted as Christians. They ‘have not God.’
Those, then, who do not believe the Bible are the enemies of the Bible and tend to deceive. They want to hold positions of leadership and gain in the churches, they wear sheep’s clothing, but they are wolves. They intentionally deceive for filthy lucre’s sake. They make merchandise of the people for covetousness.
Therefore, we do not count as important the opinions of wicked men, unconverted men, deniers of the Bible, when we study the inspiration of the Bible.
Lord willing, we will continue this topic in our next episode.
Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
