Hundreds of doses of the Covid-19 vaccine are believed to have been ruined after a fridge failed at a GP clinic.
Harborough Field Surgery in Rushden, Northamptonshire, was storing 975 precious doses of the Pfizer jab, which must be kept at minus 70 degrees.
The clinic is acting as a central hub for surgeries in the area to administer the jab to selected over-80s.
Some patients received the jab on Wednesday, December 16 but others were due to get it on Thursday and Friday in the clinic, which was opening for 12 hours each day.
But on Thursday, patients who had been expecting to attend appointments were told to stay away because the vaccine was no longer available. It is not clear how many doses were lost.
It comes after former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned the available doses of the Pfizer vaccine will run out in January and another shipment is not due until March, meaning the vaccination programme could grind to a halt.
A spokesman for Pfizer then responded to say that new shipments of the vaccine will arrive before March, in ‘early 2021’.
More than 140,000 Britons have already received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, after it was approved by the MHRA earlier this month.
One 80-year-old patient at the surgery, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘I was told that the vaccine was no longer available because they had had a problem with their fridge.
‘I had been called about an hour before to come up for the appointment.’
