The nation’s top infectious diseases expert was asked if COVID-19 has affected anyone in his life during a livestreamed interview hosted by the Harvard T.H. Chan school of Public Health moderated by CNN’s Sanjay Gupta.
‘The answer is yes, but one in particular, my youngest daughter’s boyfriend’s brother is a 32-year-old young man, athletic, healthy, who got COVID-19 and had one of the unusual complications of cardiomyopathy with an arrhythmia and died,’ Fauci said.
‘So there you have a 32-year-old young man, otherwise healthy actually, quite athletic and strong, who died,’ he added.
He revealed the death has devastated his family.
‘Very sad, really saddened my daughter greatly,’ he said.
The death is an example of how the virus doesn’t discriminate by age and can impact young, seemingly healthy people.
His daughter Alison graduated from Stanford University and works as a software engineer for Twitter in the Bay Area of California.
Fauci has three daughters with his wife Christine Grady – Jennifer 34, Megan, 31, and Alison, 28.
The top doctor said he did not spend time with his kids in person for Thanksgiving this year due to the pandemic to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.
