PODCAST: Beware of “Scholars” Who Do Not Believe the Bible Is God’s Word, Part 6 (Reasons to Believe #202 with Daniel Whyte III)

Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #202. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is Matthew 7:15-23. It reads, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from John MacArthur. He said, “Is it easy to convince someone that the Bible is the Word of God on the basis of its unity, its scientific, historical accuracy, its miracles, its archaeological evidence? I haven’t found that to be the case. In a special series spread over a three-week period I presented such data at a private college in California. I felt the proof was overwhelming and not one person became a believer. Why doesn’t it convince all unbelievers when it’s so convincing to us? Paul said it when he wrote, “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14). Only when the Holy Spirit does His regenerating work, only as He opens the mind, tears off the scales of blindness, gives life where there is death and plants the marvelous understanding of the revelation of God, only then do people come to believe and trust in the Bible. The reason I know the Bible is true is that the Spirit of God has convinced me of it.”

Today we are continuing the topic of scripture, its inerrancy, infallibility and inspiration using “Our God-breathed Book: The Bible – The Verbally Inspired, Eternal, Inerrant Word of God” by John R. Rice. Our Reasons to Believe powerpoint today comes from Chapter 2: “Beware of “Scholars” Who Do Not Believe the Bible Is God’s Word” Part 6.

4. Only the Spirit of God Can Make the Wicked Heart Open to the Bible

Bettex says: “The entire theory that science is free from presuppositions rests upon the great, false presupposition that man can be without presuppositions. Only the Holy Ghost can make man free from his presuppositions.”

Saint Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo, said, “The dark places in the Bible come from the dark places in our hearts.” A heart surrendered to God and penitently, earnestly seeking to please Him is needed if one is to understand the Bible. Bettex says:

And Luther wrote to Spalatin, who asked him concerning the best method of studying the Bible: “Above all things it is quite certain (primum id certissimum est) that one cannot search into the Holy Scriptures by means of study, nor by means of the intellect (ingenium). Therefore begin with prayer, that the Lord grant unto you the true understanding of His Word. There is no interpreter of the Word of God, except the Author of the Word, God Himself.” (L. Ep. I, p. 88.) In another place he says, “Scripture without any commentary is the sun from which all Doctors receive light.”

Those who do not believe the Bible are guilty of a bias, a prejudice, a preference against the Bible and against God.

We face a sad fact, stated above, when we consider the pronouncements of unbelievers in the Bible, unbelievers in the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection, the sinless deity of Christ and His blood atonement. Shocking as it may seem, this is one of the clearest teachings of the Bible, and honest men who care about what the Bible says and about what Jesus Christ said must consider this fact.

Lord willing, we will continue this topic in our next episode.

Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!
