How to Hope: Lessons from the Israelites and Their Messianic Expectation, Part 66 (Second Coming Chapel Sermon #281)

TEXT: Micah 4:1-5

1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.

2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.

5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.

A.W. Tozer said, “The crux of the whole matter is this: our wonderful, created world will be restored to its rightful Owner. I for one look forward to that day. I want to live here when Jesus Christ owns and rules the world. Until that hour, there will be conflict, distress and war among the nations. We will hear of suffering and terror and fear and failure. But the God who has promised a better world is the God who cannot lie. He will shake loose Satan’s hold on this world and its society and systems. Our heavenly Father will put this world into the hands that were once nailed to a cross for our race of proud and alienated sinners. It is a fact. Jesus Christ is returning to earth.”

In our last message in this series we looked at some background information about this passage which gives us a glimpse of the reign of righteousness, peace, and security which will be brought about by Jesus Christ. Here are three things we can learn from this passage that should give us hope about the second coming of Christ.

First, all people will worship and learn from the Lord. The prophet Micah tells us that the house of the Lord will be established in the top of the mountains. It’s foundations will be immovable and it will be exalted above the hills so that all can see it. The kingdom of Christ will be like a city on a hill, spreading light across the earth. People will flow into the house of the Lord. There will be a continual procession of believers coming into God’s house to worship, like a flowing stream of water. People will urge each other to go up to the mountain of the Lord to worship God. They will come to hear His instruction, for God will teach the people His ways. And unlike how people reject God’s teaching today, the people under Christ’s future reign will hear and obey. After they are taught the ways of God, they will walk in His ways, obeying His commandments. R.C. Sproul said, “To exalt the mountain of the house of the Lord over all mountains would make it dominate the whole earth. In turn, this would mean that God would be recognized as the Lord of all creation and that He would be with people from all nations, having triumphed over the chaos of evil. The world will worship Yahweh, the one true Lord of all. That is the conclusion of the Bible in many places, including this passage. Thus, we must eagerly pray for this day to arrive, and we must never think that any race, nation, or individual is so far gone as to be irredeemable. Death alone marks the point at which salvation is no longer possible. May we long for the conversion of the nations to Christ, and work to that end with our time, talents, and treasures.” Today, God’s cause and kingdom is often mocked and marginalized by secular society. But the day is coming when the kingdom of Christ will be plain to all people everywhere, and people of all nations shall rush to be in His presence, to hear His words, and to walk in His ways. In this present age, we can have hope because we know that the day is coming when many nations will come to worship God.

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
