Where I read three chapters of the Holy Bible in the King James Version each day with my family as a part of our family devotions, to encourage you to read the Holy Bible in a year’s time. Today we are reading 2 Chronicles 22, Isaiah 44, and Micah 6.

2 Chronicles 22
1 And the inhabitants of Je-ru’-sa-lem made A-ha-zi’-ah his youngest son king in his stead: for the band of men that came with the A-ra’-bi-ans to the camp had slain all the eldest. So A-ha-zi’-ah the son of Je-hor’-am king of Ju’-dah reigned.

2 Forty and two years old was A-ha-zi’-ah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Je-ru’-sa-lem. His mother’s name also was Ath-a-li’-ah the daughter of Om’-ri.

3 He also walked in the ways of the house of A’-hab: for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly.

4 Wherefore he did evil in the sight of the Lord like the house of A’-hab: for they were his counsellors after the death of his father to his destruction.

5 He walked also after their counsel, and went with Je-hor’-am the son of A’-hab king of Is’-ra-el to war against Ha-za’-el king of Syr’-i-a at Ra’-moth-gil’-e-ad: and the Syr’-i-ans smote Jor’-am.

6 And he returned to be healed in Jez’-reel because of the wounds which were given him at Ra’-mah, when he fought with Ha-za’-el king of Syr’-i-a. And Az-a-ri’-ah the son of Je-hor’-am king of Ju’-dah went down to see Je-hor’-am the son of A’-hab at Jez’-reel, because he was sick.

7 And the destruction of A-ha-zi’-ah was of God by coming to Jor’-am: for when he was come, he went out with Je-hor’-am against Je’-hu the son of Nim’-shi, whom the Lord had anointed to cut off the house of A’-hab.

8 And it came to pass, that, when Je’-hu was executing judgment upon the house of A’-hab, and found the princes of Ju’-dah, and the sons of the brethren of A-ha-zi’-ah, that ministered to A-ha-zi’-ah, he slew them.

9 And he sought A-ha-zi’-ah: and they caught him, (for he was hid in Sa-mar’-i-a,) and brought him to Je’-hu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of Je-hosh’-a-phat, who sought the Lord with all his heart. So the house of A-ha-zi’-ah had no power to keep still the kingdom.

10 But when Ath-a-li’-ah the mother of A-ha-zi’-ah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Ju’-dah.

11 But Je-ho-shab’-e-ath, the daughter of the king, took Jo’-ash the son of A-ha-zi’-ah, and stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Je-ho-shab’-e-ath, the daughter of king Je-hor’-am, the wife of Je-hoi’-a-da the priest, (for she was the sister of A-ha-zi’-ah,) hid him from Ath-a-li’-ah, so that she slew him not.

12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years: and Ath-a-li’-ah reigned over the land.

Isaiah 44
1 Yet now hear, O Ja’-cob my servant; and Is’-ra-el, whom I have chosen:

2 Thus saith the Lord that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Ja’-cob, my servant; and thou, Jes-u’-run, whom I have chosen.

3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

5 One shall say, I am the Lord’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Ja’-cob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, and surname himself by the name of Is’-ra-el.

6 Thus saith the Lord the King of Is’-ra-el, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.

8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing?

11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed: and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.

12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water, and is faint.

13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.

14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:

17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.

19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?

20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

21 Remember these, O Ja’-cob and Is’-ra-el; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Is’-ra-el, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

23 Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Ja’-cob, and glorified himself in Is’-ra-el.

24 Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Je-ru’-sa-lem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Ju’-dah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:

27 That saith to the deep, Be dry, and I will dry up thy rivers:

28 That saith of Cy’-rus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Je-ru’-sa-lem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.

Micah 6
1 Hear ye now what the Lord saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice.

2 Hear ye, O mountains, the Lord’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the Lord hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Is’-ra-el.

3 O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me.

4 For I brought thee up out of the land of E’-gypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Mo’-ses, Aa’-ron, and Mir’-i-am.

5 O my people, remember now what Ba’-lak king of Mo’-ab consulted, and what Ba’-laam the son of Be’-or answered him from Shi’-ttim unto Gil’-gal; that ye may know the righteousness of the Lord.

6 Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

9 The Lord’s voice crieth unto the city, and the man of wisdom shall see thy name: hear ye the rod, and who hath appointed it.

10 Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable?

11 Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

12 For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

13 Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins.

14 Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.

15 Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.

16 For the statutes of Om’-ri are kept, and all the works of the house of A’-hab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.

PRAY

When I was a teenager I wanted to get wisdom and knowledge, so I set out to read the big family Bible that many families had in those days. But I couldn’t get past Genesis 2 before I got bored with reading the Bible. I found out later in life that you have to believe on Christ and get saved before you can understand the Bible. So here is how I became a Christian and how you can too:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. Today we are reading Habakkuk 1:1.

1 The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

That was Habakkuk 1:1. Now here is the sense of it.

The Matthew Henry Commentary reads:
The servants of the Lord are deeply afflicted by seeing ungodliness and violence prevail; especially among those who profess the truth. No man scrupled doing wrong to his neighbour. We should long to remove to the world where holiness and love reign for ever, and no violence shall be before us. God has good reasons for his long-suffering towards bad men, and the rebukes of good men. The day will come when the cry of sin will be heard against those that do wrong, and the cry of prayer for those that suffer wrong. They were to notice what was going forward among the heathen by the Chaldeans, and to consider themselves a nation to be scourged by them. But most men presume on continued prosperity, or that calamities will not come in their days. They are a bitter and hasty nation, fierce, cruel, and bearing down all before them. They shall overcome all that oppose them. But it is a great offence, and the common offence of proud people, to take glory to themselves. The closing words give a glimpse of comfort.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:
The prophet was perplexed. Wickedness and violence seemed to go unchecked. Would there be no end to the rising tide of sin? Habakkuk took his complaint to God. “Why don’t You do something?” God answered, “I am doing something. Judah will be punished by Babylon.” Then the prophet was more perplexed. Habakkuk’s distress deepened to a profound dilemma. So he continued his conversation with God. “Why would You use those wretched Babylonian barbarians to judge Judah?” Little wonder the book was titled The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet received. The Prophet called his writing a maśśā’, a “burden.” This Hebrew noun is derived from a verb meaning “to lift up,” and consequently signifies “what is lifted up,” and thus “a burden.” The message Habakkuk presented is indeed a weighty one. However, maśśā’ was not always used to preface a burdensome message. It was used, for example, as a title for the rather non-threatening sayings recorded in Proverbs 30 and 31. Nonetheless, if there ever was a heavy message, Habakkuk had one. The title here might be more literally translated, “The burden that Habakkuk the prophet saw.” The same two Hebrew words, “burden” and “saw,” are used in Isaiah 13:1. The word “saw”, when used of the prophets, often means to see in a vision. Receiving glimpses from God into the future the prophets were sometimes called God’s “seers”.

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #274.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

2 Kings 3:16-17 reads: “And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches. 17For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.”

The armies of the three kings were famishing for want of water: God was about to send it, and in these words the prophet announced the coming blessing. Here was a case of human helplessness: not a drop of water could all the valiant men procure from the skies or find in the wells of earth. Thus often the people of the Lord are at their wits’ end; they see the vanity of the creature, and learn experimentally where their help is to be found. Still the people were to make a believing preparation for the divine blessing; they were to dig the trenches in which the precious liquid would be held. The church must by her varied agencies, efforts, and prayers, make herself ready to be blessed; she must make the pools, and the Lord will fill them. This must be done in faith, in the full assurance that the blessing is about to descend. By-and-by there was a singular bestowal of the needed boon. Not as in Elijah’s case did the shower pour from the clouds, but in a silent and mysterious manner the pools were filled. The Lord has his own sovereign modes of action: he is not tied to manner and time as we are, but doeth as he pleases among the sons of men. It is ours thankfully to receive from him, and not to dictate to him. We must also notice the remarkable abundance of the supply—there was enough for the need of all. And so it is in the gospel blessing; all the wants of the congregation and of the entire church shall be met by the divine power in answer to prayer; and above all this, victory shall be speedily given to the armies of the Lord.

What am I doing for Jesus? What trenches am I digging? O Lord, make me ready to receive the blessing which thou art so willing to bestow.
