TEXT: 1 Peter 4:7

7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

——–

John Piper said, “The end is near indeed. If anyone dallies with sin and the world, thinking, “I have lots of time,” he plays the fool. The Judge is at the door. And the time remaining should be spent in earnest prayer that we not be made drunk and hard by the cares and pleasures of this world.”

In our last two messages, we looked first at how the end of all things is drawing near and how we need to live with a sense of divine urgency in light of the imminent return of the Lord. Secondly, we looked at how we are to be sober in the last days by staying focused on God through prayer and His Word.

Third, we are to live with a continual prayerful watch for the second coming. When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, He came to His disciples expecting to find them awake and praying with and for Him. Instead He found them all asleep! Then He told them, ‘What, could ye not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.’ We need to do the same in the last days. The sad truth is that if Jesus returned today, most of us would not be sober minded, watchful, and prayerful. Instead, most Christians are silly minded, worldly, and sinful. You don’t want to be one of those Christians. Now is the time to set aside the things of this world and be watchful and prayerful. Charles Seet said, “To watch unto prayer is to be spiritually alert and awake. As we live closer to the time of Christ’s return, we must not be in a state of spiritual stupor or slumber. Brethren, when Jesus returns from Heaven soon, will He also find us in a state of slumber? How shameful it would be for us if He were to find us in this state! Dearly beloved, how long has it been since you last had real quality quiet time with the Lord? How long has it been since you last experienced God’s presence in your life in a wonderful way? How long has it been since your Bible study was a great delight to you and were discovering marvelous gems from God’s Word that thrilled your soul? How long has it been since you were moved to tears by the thought of the grace of the Lord to you, a sinner? If it has been a long time and cannot even remember when it was, it is certainly high time for you to wake up from your spiritual slumber, and to watch unto prayer! This is not the time to be spiritually asleep, but the time to be fully revived. This is the time for us all to lay aside every sin and anything in our lives that may hinder our spiritual growth, and run the race that is set before us. This is the time for us to draw closer to God, and to seek His face.” Dear Christian, it is time for you to wake up from your spiritual slumber. You must get up and get to your watchtower and duty of prayer. Begin today to change your lifestyle. Pray right now and ask for the Lord to help you to change your life so that you are sober minded, watchful, and prayerful.

Fanny Crosby wrote:

Watch and pray that when the Master cometh,
If at morning, noon, or night,
He may find a lamp in every window,
Trimmed, and burning clear and bright.

Watch and pray; the tempter may be near us;
Keep the heart with jealous care,
Lest the door, a moment left unguarded,
Evil thoughts may enter there.

Watch and pray, nor let us ever weary;
Jesus watched and prayed alone;
Prayed for us when only stars beheld Him,
While on Olive’s brow they shone.

Watch and pray, nor leave our post of duty,
Till we hear the Bridegroom’s voice;
Then with Him the marriage feast partaking,
We shall evermore rejoice.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life.
