Chief Justice John Roberts Joins Liberals in 5-4 Ruling That Trump Cannot End Obama’s DACA Program and Deport 700,000 Illegal Immigrants who Came to the U.S. as Children – in Second Defeat in a Week for President

The U.S. Supreme Court dealt Trump a major setback on his hardline immigration policies, ruling against his bid to end a program that protects from deportation hundreds of thousands of immigrants, dubbed ‘Dreamers,’ who entered the United States illegally as children. At least 700,000 are affected. The justices upheld lower court rulings that found that Trump’s 2017 move to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, created in 2012 by his Democratic predecessor Barack Obama, was unlawful. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court that the administration did not pursue the end of the program properly. The ruling was 5-4. Roberts was joined by the liberal justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Steven Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor. The ruling came two days after the administration lost a bid to declare that gay and transgender people do not have federal civil rights protection from being fired.
