How to Hope: Lessons from the Israelites and Their Messianic Expectation, Part 42 (Second Coming Chapel Sermon #257)

TEXT: Psalm 110

1 The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2 The Lord shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

4 The Lord hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.

7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.

J.C. Ryle said, “A true Christian has a good hope when he looks ahead: the worldly man has none. A true Christian sees light in the distance: the worldly man sees nothing but darkness. And what is the hope of a true Christian? It is just this, – that Jesus Christ is coming again, coming without sin, – coming with all His people, – coming to wipe away every tear, – coming to raise His sleeping saints from the grave, – coming to gather together all His family, that they may be for ever with Him. Why is a believer patient? Because he looks for the coming of the Lord. He can bear hard things without murmuring. He knows the time is short. He waits quietly for the King.”

A.W. Tozer said, “This is the kind of age and hour when the Lord’s people should be so alert to the hope and promise of His coming that they should get up every morning just like a child on Christmas morning—eager and believing that it should be today!”

In our last two messages in this series, we looked at how this passage shows us that. Jesus is the ruler of the earth. We also saw our Jesus is our eternal priest after the order of Melchizedek, interceding for us before God.

Third, Jesus is the judge of the world. Psalm 110:5-7 said, “The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.” This last few verses refers to the judgment that Jesus will bring to bear against the nations of the earth upon His return as described in Revelation 19. David Guzik said, “The favor and strength of the Messiah (Your right hand) is aligned with, and an instrument of, the strength of God (the Lord). The second part of the psalm carries the King into the battlefield. He comes forth from the throne, where He sat at Jehovah’s right hand, and now Jehovah stands at His right hand. Now the Lord and his King act as one, and the army of volunteers which was seen in verse 3 is no longer in the picture. The battle is the Lord’s, yet he and his King are so united. With the authority mentioned in verse 2, the strength of the Messiah extends out of Zion and brings the righteous judgment of God against even the greatest kings. In His conquest, the Messiah will exercise His authority over all nations, bringing His judgment. He shall fill the places with dead bodies seems to anticipate the slaughter at the Battle of Armageddon. The choice for every man is being crushed beneath His foot, or being exalted to sit with Him on His throne. ‘He that overcometh, to him will I give to sit down with Me on My throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father on His throne.’ It is better to sit on His throne than to be His footstool.” While the rebellious nations of the world receive their judgment, the Messiah Himself is refreshed and exalted. Curiously, many commentators take ‘He shall drink’ as a reference to the Messiah’s humiliation. It is better to see it as His refreshment on the day of battle. “Psalm 110:7 is usually taken as depicting the King as pausing in His victorious pursuit of the flying foe to drink, like Gideon’s men, from the brook, and then with renewed vigour pressing on.” He shall lift up the head means that he shall be delivered from all his sorrows and sufferings, and exalted to great glory, and joy, and felicity; as, on the contrary, to hang down the head, is a signification of great grief and shame. His own head shall be lifted high in victory, and his people, in him, shall be upraised also.” These verses use the imagery of a warrior-king pursuing and slaying his enemies to show the Messiah conquering the earth at His second coming, We need to understand that God is coming one day in the future to declare judgment against the earth. You need to make sure that you are prepared. If you are a Christian, you need to make sure that you are living the way God wants you to so that you will be seen as a faithful servant when He returns. If you are not a Christian, you need to be saved so that your name will be in the book of life and you will no longer be in danger of hell.

O quickly come, sure Light of all,
for gloomy night broods o’er our way;
and weakly souls begin to fall
with weary watching for the day:
O quickly come, for round thy throne
no eye is blind, no night is known.

Now, if you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, I urge you to trust in Him because He is coming again and you do not want to be left behind. Here is how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and the consequences of sin.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
