PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #425: Amos 2:10-12 (with Daniel Whyte III)

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #425, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 2:10-12.

10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.

12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

________

That was Amos 2:10-12. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

The Exodus from Egypt and God’s preservation of Israel during 40 years in the desert evidenced His kindness and good intentions toward her. God also raised up spiritual leaders for the nation. Prophets from among their own sons conveyed His words to them, and Nazirites, who consecrated themselves by vows for limited periods of time, portrayed the depth of commitment that all Israel was supposed to share. But despite these gracious acts Israel added two more sins to her account. She intimidated the Nazirites to break their vows and drink wine, and she commanded the prophets not to prophesy. In so doing Israel revealed her own lack of commitment to God and her unwillingness to hear His Word.
