Savannah Guthrie Undergoes Eye Surgery for Torn Retina

Savannah Guthrie missed her Wednesday “Today” show appearance for eye surgery following an accident that left her with a torn retina last month.

“I’m sure some folks are waking up and going ‘Where is Savannah this morning?’ ” said co-host Hoda Kotba, joined by “Today” co-anchor Craig Melvin. “She’s going to keep us posted. So we wish for her very speedy recovery.”

After announcing Nov. 27 that she suffered an injury when her 3-year-old son, Charley, threw a toy train at her eye, the TV host had five laser treatments before Wednesday’s retinal detachment surgery. Ophthalmologist Dr. Annie Negrin told the show that the surgery can require patients to be face down at all times for up to three weeks.
