A Florida grandmother’s 70th birthday celebration a day after Christmas ended with the elderly woman getting hit with a Taser three times and hauled off to jail by sheriff’s deputies.
Officers with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office arrived at Barbara Pinkney’s home in Bradenton early Thursday morning looking for her grandson, 22-year-old Tevin Turner, who they said violated the conditions of his probation by carrying a concealed weapon.
Pinkney told the deputies her grandson was not home and tried to close the door on them.
According to an arrest report cited by NBC News, Pinkney demanded to see a search warrant, but was told that the deputies did not need one because they had obtained a warrant for her grandson’s arrest.
Pinkney continued denying the officers entry into her home, prompting one of them to warn her that if she kept it up, she could be going to jail on a charge of obstruction.
According to the report, when one of the deputies tried to arrest the senior citizen, she pulled away from him and pushed him in the chest.
Cellphone video recorded by Turner’s wife shows a deputy grab the grandmother’s wrist as she withdraws from him.
The deputy then deploys a stun gun against Pinkney, and the 5-foot-2 woman collapses to the floor screaming.
According to the arrest report, deputies had to hit Pinkney three times with the Taser and pin her to the floor in order to subdue her.
‘I was just hollering. I was scared. I didn’t know what else to do,’ Pinkney later told WFLA.
Pinkney was ultimately taken into custody and charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer and obstructing justice.
She was released the next day on $1,000. Her next court date is scheduled for January 17.
Back at her home, Pinkney says the experience has left her traumatized and unable to sleep.
Her grandson, who has a prior criminal record that includes charges of cocaine and marijuana possession, has not been apprehended as of Monday morning.
Sheriff’s officials suspect he may have escaped out the back during the commotion at the front of his grandmother’s home.
