TEXT: 1 John 2:8-11
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, “I have decided to stick to love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
In our last message in this series, we saw how those who hate their brothers and sisters in Christ are still in the darkness of the world rather than the light of Christ. Christians who love their brothers and sisters are truly walking in the light of God, and they will not pose a stumblingblock to others.
As we move on to the next verses in this passage, let’s look at some information from the Bible Knowledge Commentary: “By contrast, whoever loves his brother lives in the light of the new Age which has dawned in Christ. There is nothing in him (in one who loves his brother) to make him stumble. Hatred is a kind of internal “stumbling block” which can lead to disastrous spiritual falls. But the calamities to which hatred leads are avoided by one who loves his brother. This is not so, however, for one who hates his brother. Such a person walks around in the darkness and he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him (cf. v. 9). A Christian who harbors hatred for a fellow Christian has lost all real sense of direction. Like a man wandering aimlessly in the dark, he faces potentially grave dangers.”
Hatred is the sign of a soul that is walking in spiritual darkness. When we accept Christ as Saviour, we ought to strive to show His love in the world. Think about the love that Jesus showed: He healed the sick, fed the hungry, forgave sinners, and rebuked evil. But most of all, He sacrificed Himself so that we could be saved. To love other Christians means to treat them not necessarily the way we would treat ourselves, but the way God treated us.
Those who are hating their brothers while claiming to be Christians are actually still walking in darkness. They are walking in the darkness of an unregenerate mind and soul, rather than one which has been saved in Christ. The hateful person does not know where he is going spiritually. His eyes may be open on earth to see where he is going physically, but he does not know his final destination. There are many hateful people who think they are on the stairway to heaven, but they have been blinded by spiritual darkness and do not know that they are on the highway to hell.
A true Christian will strive to love his brothers and sisters. Even though he may stumble and falter sometimes, he will ultimately show the love of Christ to others, because he is walking in the light of God.
If you are a Christian listening today, here are three things you need to do:
1. Confess and repent of your own sins. You already know what they are.
2. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ to repent of their sins and get back to their first love
3. Pray for souls to be saved, and do your part by witnessing to the lost.
Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
