TEXT: 1 John 2:8-11

8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

—————-

Dwight L. Moody said, “If we have got the true love of God shed abroad in our hearts, we will show it in our lives. We will not have to go up and down the earth proclaiming it. We will show it in everything we say or do.”

In our last message in this series, we saw how those who hate their brothers and sisters in Christ are accepting the darkness of the world rather than the light of God. On the other hand, those who love their brothers and sisters in Christ are truly walking in the light of Christ. They see Christ’s sacrifice as the foundation for the love they should have toward others, and they work to show Christ’s love towards others, regardless of their physical differences.

When we show love to our fellow Christians, we will cease to be a stumblingblock to them. Due to the history of white supposed Christians oppressing those of other races in America, some people have taken the view that Christianity is also an oppressive “white man’s religion.” Unfortunately, many black Americans have been pulled away from the faith into false religion through the work of groups like the Nation of Islam and people like Malcolm X, who painted Christianity as a “slave religion.” While the sins of others are no reason to walk away from God’s offer of grace, one wonders if the rise of the Nation of Islam in the 1950s and 60s would have happened if white supremacy had never happened. And by the way, the black supremacy of the Nation of Islam is just as bad as the white supremacy of the KKK. However, Islamists are openly living in darkness, while the KKK claim to be Christians. Both sides are in danger of hell, but the KKK pose a stumbling block to those trying to find out the truth of Christ.

When we are governed by the light of God, we will love our brothers and sisters as Christ loves them. Not only will we abide in the light ourselves, but we will be a shining example to others, that they may also walk in the light of Christ, without stumbling upon our sin and out of the faith.

Isaac Watts wrote:

Now by the bowels of my God,
His sharp distress, his sore complaints,
By his last groans, his dying blood,
I charge my soul to love the saints.

Clamor, and wrath, and war, begone,
Envy and spite, for ever cease;
Let bitter words no more be known
Amongst the saints, the sons of peace.

The Spirit, like a peaceful dove,
Flies from the realms of noise and strife:
Why should we vex and grieve his love
Who seals our souls to heav’nly life?

Tender and kind be all our thoughts,
Through all our lives let mercy run;
So God forgives our numerous faults,
For the dear sake of Christ his Son.

If you are a Christian listening today, here are three things you need to do:

1. Confess and repent of your own sins. You already know what they are.

2. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ to repent of their sins and get back to their first love

3. Pray for souls to be saved, and do your part by witnessing to the lost.

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
