McDonald’s is looking to capitalize on the chicken sandwich craze by launching its own barbecue version.
An all-out fast food war broke out this summer after Popeyes unveiled its chicken sandwich to demand so overwhelming the item sold out nationwide in under three weeks.
The sandwich sparked a fierce debate between Popeyes and Chick-fil-A fans that quickly expanded as other chains reminded customers of their existing offerings and introduced new variations.
McDonald’s is gearing up to join the fray with a new Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich, partnered with Spicy BBQ Chicken Tenders.
The items have been tested for several months and officially become available for a limited time on September 11.
Rumors of McDonald’s adding a spicy chicken option first cropped up in June, suggesting that the offering is not in response to the Popeye’s craze which saw hours-long lines and fights break out between customers eager to get their hands on one.
The sandwich is described as a ‘classic Buttermilk crispy Buttermilk made with all-white meat and served on a sesame seed bun with slivered onions, pickles and topped with that same smoky, sweet with medium heat Spicy BBQ glaze’, according to Fox News.
