What Is Intercessory Prayer?
Intercession in the religious sense is the act of asking God or other divine powers to intervene on behalf of yourself or others. There are many examples of intercessory prayer in both the Old and New testaments.
One of the main points of intercession is to understand God’s will and see it enacted, regardless of personal cost or benefits. In other words, you are trying to bring the glory of God into the world, whether it helps you or not.
There are several examples in both the Old and New Testament of who you should make intercessory prayer for in times of need. These include our enemies, the sick, friends and countrymen, Jerusalem and all people, to name a few.
When the prophet Isaiah pleads with Jehovah to deliver his people through divine intervention, this is an example of this type of prayer. Other examples include Daniel surviving in the lion’s den, Moses’ parting of the Red Sea, and Joshua asking God to keep the sun in the sky.
In the Christian faith, the sacrifice of Jesus is considered the ultimate act of intercession. By taking on the sins of the world and being sacrificed, Jesus acts as a conduit for prayer, allowing Christians to ask God for help in his name.
Some Christians may not feel like they are worthy or holy enough to ask for intercession. However, the New Testament makes it clear that all believers should make intercessory prayer when needed. To quote Ephesians 6:18, “…keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”
You Can Pray for Intercession by Yourself or as Part of a Group
When you are troubled by worldly events and are praying to make things better, you don’t have to do it alone. When you join with others and pray for divine intervention to lift people’s spirits and make their lives better, this is called corporate intercession.
To practice corporate intercession, gather with your fellow faithful and think about a natural disaster, troubling situation, or person in need. Each person can offer a prayer, or you can pray collectively, followed by a moment of silence so God can have the last word.
Another way to intercede is to perform simple acts of kindness and love for those in need. This can take the form of making a charitable donation in a loved one’s name or sending a message of encouragement. You could even take up a noble cause and speak out for those who can’t speak for themselves.
