Welcome to the Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony podcast, a companion podcast to the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony message series. My name is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International. The purpose of this podcast is to share with you, from a biblical perspective, the means by which we can combat and overcome the sin of gluttony and its outcome of obesity.
Our passage from the Word of God today is Psalm 78:18 which reads: “And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they spake against God; they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?”
Now, let’s look at gluttony and its effects in the news: According to the New York Post, Consumer Protect recently analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine the most unhealthy states in the US. According to the organization, West Virginia — followed closely by Mississippi and Oklahoma — is the most obese in the US, with roughly 38 percent of adults in the state struggling with obesity as of 2017. By contrast, Colorado was determined by Consumer Protect to be the least obese state in the nation, with roughly 22.6 percent of adults in the state being obese as of the same year. America has long dealt with the issue of obesity. The condition affected 93.3 million adults in the country from 2015 to 2016, per the CDC.
In this podcast, we are going through the book, The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle: The Natural Foods Diet With Meals that Heal, by Mike Anderson. This section is titled: Why Doesn’t The Government Promote This Diet?:
Today, small farmers have been displaced by huge agri-businesses that receive almost all agricultural subsidies – and reap almost all the profits. And to ensure that the tradition of political support and rich subsidies continues uninterrupted, agri-businesses funnel millions of dollars into the pockets of politicians every election.
With the democratization of animal foods (and refrigerators), everyone thought Americans had the best darn diet on the planet because rich foods were affordable and everyone could eat animal products on a regular basis. At mid-point in the century, however, something started to happen to Americans – they were suddenly dying of heart attacks and cancer was starting to spread like wildfire.
Since we had the best diet on the planet, no one suspected that eating animal foods had anything to do with these two health epidemics. Medical researchers searched high and low for an explanation and came up empty-handed – until a few researchers started looking into our change to an animal-based diet.
Once the investigation into diet showed promise, massive efforts were employed in an attempt to find out what it was about our diet that caused disease. Over 50 years later, we are literally buried in scientific papers linking animal foods to the leading causes of death and disability in this country.
— PRAYER —
Now, in this series, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?
The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Until next time, may God bless you and keep you is my prayer.
