“Empire” Showrunner Reveals Jussie Smollett Was Written Out of the Show with Plot Line That Involves Him Never Returning From his Honeymoon… Seven Months After his Fabricated ‘Hate Crime’ Took Place

He is on honeymoon.

And that’s where Jussie Smollett’s character Jamal is going to stay, according to Empire showrunner Brett Mahoney.

He revealed how Jussie is being written out of the Fox show’s sixth and final season in an interview with TVLine on Friday.

It comes after Empire co-creator Lee Daniels confirmed that the 37-year-old would not return for the sixth and final season earlier this month.

The character was last seen getting married and taking off on his honeymoon.

‘Jamal is taking a sabbatical from the family,’ Brett said. ‘He doesn’t want to be caught up in Lyon family drama, which is very much in keeping with his point of last season — that [the family business] should be something that the family moves away from.’

As a result, ‘Jamal and Kai have decided to stay in London.’

In February, Jussie was cut from the final episodes of season 5, following ongoing legal trouble.

In January, he reported that he had been a victim of an alleged hate crime to Chicago police and was later indicted on 16 counts of disorderly conduct after allegedly filing a false police report.

He maintained his innocence and in March, all charges against him were dropped.
