TEXT: Acts 17:26-28
26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
1 John 3:18 says, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
Billy Graham said, “The Bible declares that we who follow Christ should be just as much in love with each other as God was in love with us when He sent His Son to die on the cross. The moment we come to Christ, Scripture says, God gives us supernatural love that is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. The greatest demonstration of the fact that we are Christians is that we love one another. Why not go out of our way to be a friend to someone whose skin is a different color from ours? Love does more to solve our problems than anything else does. Of all the gifts God offers His children, love is the greatest. Of all the fruits of the Holy Spirit, love is the first.”
In our last message, we looked at human efforts to create segregated societies. There were many whites who wanted whites-only communities, and there were militant blacks who thought black Americans should get together and form their own nation.
But, if we look at Paul’s speech to the Athenians, we find that God is sovereign over the times and places in which every member of His creation finds themselves existing. He “hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.” In other words, when you live and where you live is under God’s direction, regardless of your race, ethnicity, or nationality. If you are the only black family in your neighborhood today, God wants you to be there. If you are the only white family on your street, God wants you to be there. If you are the only person of a particular race in your classroom, or in your church, or on your sports team, God knows you are there because He directed where you would be and when you would be at this time in history. If you are part of a minority community surrounded by a majority that is of another race or culture or language, take heart: God has directed the when and the where of your life.
Conversely, if you are part of the majority, or if you are part of a privileged community, you must understand that it is under God’s direction that you live where you live and when you live. He ‘appointed the times’ and the ‘bounds of your habitation.’ It can’t be denied that, for a long time, whites have been in the majority and have had many advantages in this country. And all of that happened under God’s sovereign hand. However, demographic researchers tell us that within a couple of decades, people of color will be the majority in this country. God is not ignorant of such shifts, for the times in which we live and the places where we live are under His sovereign hand.
We can’t get angry because someone of another race or culture or ethnicity is present in an area that we consider “ours.” The earth is the Lord’s and He gives time and place according to His will. It is our job to love our neighbors as we love ourselves no matter their differences. Slavery and Jim Crow are ugly, stains on this nation’s history. But God often takes evil things and brings some good out of them. I can see the good when I consider that my ancestors probably would not have come to faith in Jesus Christ unless their ancestors had come to America in chains. They meant it for evil, but God meant it for good. Generations of African-Americans came up from the darkness of slavery and discrimination and into the light and life of the Gospel of Christ that not only frees the body and the mind, but saves the body and the soul. Instead of focusing on the negatives of the time and place in which we live, lets focus on the fact that God has placed all of us in this together — right here, right now. And if we are to be faithful to our Christian witness, we must “live peaceably with all men.”
If you are a Christian listening today, here are three things you need to do:
1. Confess and repent of your own sins. You already know what they are.
2. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ to repent of their sins and get back to their first love
3. Pray for souls to be saved, and do your part by witnessing to the lost.
Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
