When Auburn gymnast Sam Cerio began the road to recovery from severe knee injuries sustained on a tumbling pass gone awry on April 5, she had one goal in mind: walking down the aisle at her wedding.
On June 1, less than two months after she had surgery and in front of friends and family gathered at the Fairhope Yacht Club, Cerio accomplished her goal of making it to the altar without a scooter, walker or crutches.

Cerio was confident she’d be able to walk independently at her wedding after walking across the stage to receive her degree in aerospace engineering in May. But knowing that she “was able to stand up on my own feet and able to walk around and walk down the aisle” made the big day feel “a whole lot sweeter,” she said.
Though Cerio said she doubted any of her loved ones were surprised that she achieved her goal, it was still a “wow moment” for wedding guests.
