In “God Has Smiled On Me,” Daniel Whyte III Celebrates a Black Father Who Stayed

It’s not easy being a father, because fatherhood comes with great responsibility, dedication, obligation, and commitment. God Has Smiled On Me: A Tribute to a Black Father Who Stayed, by Daniel Whyte III, is a tribute to his own father, Daniel White Jr., who did the mature and right thing by accepting the responsibilities of fatherhood, and dedicated himself to staying with his family, through thick and thin. It was not easy, as Daniel White, Jr. shares in a special interview that Daniel Whyte III conducted with his father before he died. Whyte credits his father’s staying for making him a great father today to his children.

God Has Smiled On Me is not only a tribute to the author’s father, but it is also a tribute to all black fathers who have chosen to stay and not shun their responsibility to be there for their sons and daughters. Daniel Whyte III states in the introduction of God Has Smiled On Me: “Even though I had a few holes in my soul that needed to be filled while growing up, thankfully, the painful hole that could have been caused by divorce was filled by a loving dad who did the responsible and right thing and who, quite frankly, put up with a lot of disrespect and foolishness to stay with his family.”

Throughout the pages of God Has Smiled On Me, Whyte discusses what his father’s staying meant to him, positive and negative lessons he learned from his father staying, early memories of his father, and special moments he shared with his father. Chapters such as “The Importance of Fathers Staying,” “What Great Men Have Said About Their Fathers,” and “A Tribute to My Father’s Legacy” will inspire men to be the best fathers they can be.
