A Challenge to Be Thankful
Everyday, think of one thing to thank God for, read a quote on being thankful, and read a verse from the Bible on thankfulness. Do this for 365 days straight. The Bible tells us to give thanks always; not just when we feel like it or when everything is going well. King David commanded the children of Israel in 1 Chronicles 23:30 to “stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at even.” This is a great way to start and end your day. By choosing to be thankful for at least one thing a day, you will begin to cultivate a heart of thanksgiving everyday.
I am thankful for salvation through Jesus Christ.
“We have received too much from God to allow ourselves opportunities for unbelief. We have received too many gifts and privileges to allow a grumbling, murmuring heart to disqualify us of our destiny. In contrast, the thankful heart sees the best part of every situation. Holy Father God, there are not enough notebooks or pens in the world for us to write down every single blessings You have bestowed upon us each day. Help us, however, to periodically call to our minds the joys of this journey called life for in the end it’s not just the destination that counts but what we learned and how we traveled on the journey. Thank You for this life, for this moment, in which we can express and begin to pay our debt of gratitude to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for God’s grace.
On the night I was robbed: “I thanked the Lord first because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse they did not take my life; third, although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed and not I who robbed.”
“It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High.”
Holy Father God, thank You for the opportunity You have given us to reflect Your love and light in the world. Thank You for the grace You give to us to be able to effectively and successfully manage every situation we find ourselves in for we know that what You allow us to go through will be used to make us into the productive, purposeful people we should be. Help us to become the change we want to see and make the difference we desire in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful that one day, at a set time, I will go to Heaven to be with the Lord.
“That thing that is not coming to you may seem good. But either the timing is wrong, or from His position He can see that the future of it is bleak. I have always believed that people who thank God only for delivering them from what happened are just scraping the surface of praise. The real praise comes when you start thanking Him for what could have happened but didn’t because of His swift grace!”
T. D. Jakes
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
Holy Father God, help us to indeed find reasons to thank You and praise You, not only when we are delivered from something, but when we are saved from something happening in the first place. When our lives are centered around the many things You’ve done for us, we are better able to live our lives in gratitude for every moment that comes our way. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for the occasional embarrassment because every once in a while, we need to be humbled.
“How many times do we miss God’s blessings because they are not packaged as we expected?”
“And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of Him to all them who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.”
Holy Father God, help us not to miss the blessings You seek to give to us because they aren’t exactly like we expect them to be. Sometimes, You bless us by surprising us so that we really know it was You who gave the blessing and not us. Thank You for those times and help us to live in gratitude every day of our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for thankful people.
“The most important prayer in the world is just two words long: ‘Thank you.'”
“I will offer to Thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.”
Holy Father God, let our minds and hearts be attentive to Your voice at all times, and help our will to line up with Your plan for our lives. Make us grateful souls not only for the good that comes our way but also for the bad. Help us to use the power that exists within us to make a difference in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful that I have a purpose in life.
“Oh what a happy soul am I although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world contented I shall be. How many blessings I enjoy that other people don’t. To weep and sigh, because I’m blind? I cannot and I won’t.”
“I give thanks unto thee, O Lord, and sing praises unto thy name.”
Holy Father God, help us to refuse doubt, fear, worry, and confusion in our lives. Replace our feelings of fear and inadequacy with courage and confidence, not in ourselves, but in You and in who You made us to be. We surrender our will to You and we say ‘yes’ to Your plan and purpose for our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful that I am surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.
“Pride slays thanksgiving, but an humble mind is the soil out of which thanks naturally grows. A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.”
Henry Ward Beecher
“To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.”
Holy Father God, deliver us from prideful attitudes that rob us of joy and gratitude. Help us to embrace humility and to live confidently in Your promises. Give us grace to live each day with purpose, power, and passion. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for contentment.
“The optimist says, the cup is half full. The pessimist says, the cup is half empty. The child of God says; My cup runneth over.”
“So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will show forth thy praise to all generations.”
Holy Father God, we thank You for the gift of life, for the ability to live, and for the grace to see new possibilities come in our direction. Help us to choose to think positively and see life optimistically. Thank You not only for this cup, but for this cup that is overflowing with blessings too numerous to count. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for true justice.
“Ingratitude denotes spiritual immaturity. Infants do not always appreciate what parents do for them. They have short memories. Their concern is not what you did for me yesterday, but what are you doing for me today. The past is meaningless and so is the future. They live for the present. Those who are mature are deeply appreciative of those who laboured in the past. They recognize those who labour during the present and provide for those who will be labouring in the future.”
“Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice.”
Holy Father God, deliver us from short memories of Your blessings and short-term expressions of gratitude. Help us to be thankful for all that has been done for us, all that is being done for us, and all that will be done for us by You and by others. Help us not to allow a deficiency of gratitude in our lives but to remain in an ever present state of thanksgiving. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful that I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
“Blessings hemmed with praise will not unravel.”
“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands.”
Holy Father God, make us to be the change we want to see in the world. Open our eyes to the suffering of others and give us compassionate hearts that seek to ease pain and bring comfort, hope, and healing where we can. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
I am thankful for angels unawares.
“Receive every day as a resurrection from death, as a new enjoyment of life; meet every rising sun with such sentiments of God’s goodness, as if you had seen it, and all things, new-created upon your account: and under the sense of so great a blessing, let your joyful heart praise and magnify so good and glorious a Creator.”
“Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.”
Holy Father God, cause us to be sensitive to Your voice and grateful for each new day that we are blessed to live in. Help us to make Your grace and goodness known in the world and especially among those we are around each day. From the rising of the sun to the going down of the same, we choose to praise Your name. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
