The Story Behind “I Don’t Feel Noways Tired”

An old black lady was the inspiration for Rev. James Cleveland’s song “I Don’t Feel Noways Tired.”

According to the blog MassCommons, this woman “was exhausted, bone-weary. Her feet were swollen, her back ached, she was short of breath. She’d been walking a long and dusty road, filled with potholes and fallen branches. She’d had a hard life, the kind of life where you get up every day knowing that people are going to hate you and demean you and mistreat you just because of who you are.

“How do you walk that road, day after day, year after year, decade after decade? For this woman, the answer was God—her Protector, her Redeemer, her Sanctifier, her Liberator.”

We are playing the song on this site because Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, is, by the grace of God, celebrating 40 years in the ministry as a full-time evangelist preaching the Gospel (December 19, 1979 – 2019), and he feels no ways tired. All glory be to God!

The lyrics of the song are as follows:

I don’t feel no ways tired,
I’ve come too far from where I started from

Nobody told me that the road would be easy
I don’t believe he brought me this far to leave me

I don’t feel noways tired
Come tomorrow where I started from

Nobody told me Nobody promised me
That the road was gonna be easy

Oh, but I don’t believe He brought me
this far Can I get a witness here tonight?

I don’t know ’bout you tonight
But I’ve been running for Jesus a long time
And there’s something about walking with him,
Hallelujah Everyday gets sweeter Than the day before
And for some reason I don’t mind the pitfalls,

Cause every time I get to one,
He’s right there
And I can say just like that old mother says that night
I don’t feel no ways tired, Lord
I’ve come too far from where I started from
Nobody told me that the road would be easy.

Well I don’t believe He’d bring me this far,
and just leave me
I’m gon’ say it one more time
I don’t feel no ways tired, Lord

I’ve come too far along from where I started from
Nobody told me that the road would be easy
Well I don’t believe He brought me this far

I don’t believe He’d bring me
Through all the things I’ve come through
I’ve been sick But God brought me
I’ve been in trouble And God brought me
I’ve been trembling
I’ve been lonely Oh I don’t believe
I don’t believe
I don’t believe He’d bring me all this way
Oh Jesus
Don’t leave me Jesus
Don’t leave me Jesus
Don’t leave me Jesus
Don’t leave
I don’t believe He brought me this far
I don’t believe He brought me this far
I don’t believe He brought me this far
To leave me
