The family of a four-year-old boy who died after his older, schizophrenic brother allegedly threw him off the roof of a New York apartment building, has released a smiling photo of the child.
Shimron Smith was found unconscious and unresponsive in a courtyard outside the apartment block in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The boy died at the scene after the emergency services were called to the building in Brooklyn at around 3.30am.
Police arrested Shimron’s brother, Shawn Smith, 20, who has a history of schizophrenia.
Marc Liverman, the building’s superintendent said that he woke up to find dozens of police officers outside the block.
He added: ‘It’s very sad, sad, sad.’
Police and paramedics raced to the scene after someone called 911 to report that the boy had been injured in a fall.
That someone was Shimron’s older brother.
‘I just killed my brother — I took my brother up to the roof and I threw him off,’ Smith allegedly told officers, according to the New York Post.
He then reportedly led officers to little Shimron’s body in the courtyard located in Brooklyn’s East Midwood neighborhood.
According to the newspaper, Shawn has no prior criminal record or history of violence.
But his family said that Shawn has been hearing voices that ordered him to do ‘something bad’.
Shawn had reportedly been suicidal in the past few months, particularly in April when several 911 calls were placed on his behalf.
He had climbed to the same roof of his family’s apartment building and threatened to jump.
Shawn was last admitted into the Kings County Hospital in July for psychiatric treatment, and had stopped taking his medication to treat his schizophrenia, according to the Post.
He was charged with murder Saturday afternoon.
According to a neighbor, Shawn and Shimron lived with their mother, Odessa Frith.
Frith, a mother-of-six, had moved her children into the apartment in December from Guyana.
