Pastor John Gray Prays at President Trump’s Meeting With ‘Inner City’ Pastors

Greenville, S.C., pastor John Gray opened up a religious leader meeting with President Donald Trump by invoking Dr. Martin Luther King’s axiom about not being able to influence leaders when one isn’t at the table.

Gray, of Relentless Church, gave the opening prayer at the meeting of inner city pastors, according to a White House transcript.

Trump asked Gray how his church was doing and Gray said after three months, he has 5,000 to 6,000 attendees. Gray, who had previously preached at Joel Osteen’s church in Texas and has a reality show on the OWN television network, took over Redemption Church earlier this year and changed the name to Relentless.

Pastors from around the country were invited to talk about prison reform efforts the president said were being led by Jared Kushner, a special assistant to the president and the president’s son-in-law.

Gray was the last pastor to speak on the issue and he echoed his invocation about the importance of being around the table when decisions are made, according to the transcript.

“In a time of moral relativism and secular humanism, it is refreshing to know that those of us who have committed our lives to fighting for people who cannot fight for themselves have a seat at the table to share our hearts,” Gray said. “I believe that the very best principles of Scripture call us to fight for the poor, for the oppressed, for those who have made mistakes. Criminal justice reform is an opportunity to give a second and third chance to those who want to become productive members of society. Our nation cannot forget the broken. It is in the best tradition of our nation to fight for them.”

Most of the pastors gave praise to Trump’s efforts on economic issues and for focusing on prison reform.

Another Relentless pastor, Travis Hayes, earlier told the president he used to be in law enforcement and was excited to hear about the president’s plans to employ former prisoners.
