John Legend reached out to his longtime friend Kanye West on Thursday, in light of his recent comments regarding Donald Trump. JL hoped Yeezy would reconsider aligning himself with Trump because of the power and influence West’s words have on his fans and society as a whole, but instead, West aired their text exchange on Twitter.
Legend phoned into Hot 97 for a conversation with Ebro Darden on Friday (April 27) to clarify his stance on Kanye tweeting the private messages.
“I’m not mad people saw it because at least they know where I’m coming from. I didn’t actually mind it after I thought about it for a second, but I was shocked when it first happened,” says Legend, who has been extremely vocal against Trump’s policies. “I think Kanye, when he talks about Trump, he’s thinking about him more as a marketing triumph. I think he sees certain aspects of himself in Trump. He sees how brash he is and that he doesn’t give a ****, how nobody believed he was gonna win. How he defied all the odds and became president.”
The “All of Me” singer also exposed the inconsistencies in Kanye’s free-thought methodology. “He’s talking about free thought and Trump doesn’t even want a free press,” he goes on. “I don’t see how you align yourself with that and say you’re operating yourself from love.”
Legend warns the Chicago native that these new supporters of his aren’t actually being authentic. “These MAGA folks are all over his nuts right now and as soon as he says something about Taylor Swift, these are the same people calling him the N-word, everything they could possibly imagine,” he says.
Overall, Kanye admitted he’s appreciative of JL’s thoughts but would not cave to outside pressure. “I really appreciate this dialogue with John Legend because I’m actually very empathetic,” West wrote on Twitter. “I’m still the kid from the telethon. I feel when people think of MAGA they don’t think of empathy.”
