Will Smith says America is currently experiencing a “purge,” or cleansing, under President Trump and that it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings in the right direction and the country emerges in a new, more evolved light.

The actor spoke optimistically about America’s future during a press conference promoting his upcoming Netflix film, “Bright,” in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, one day after Republican Roy Moore lost the Senate special election in Alabama to Democrat Doug Jones.

“In terms of where the world is, I actually have a little bit of a brighter perspective of where we are right now,” Mr. Smith told reporters at the Four Seasons Hotel, The Grio reported. “This is the purge. This is the cleanse. This is what happens. This is the natural reaction to the amount of light that came into the world when Barack Obama was the president.”

The actor never mentioned Mr. Jones or Mr. Trump by name, but said humanity would inevitably evolve as a result of this contentious political climate.

“From the Daoist perspective, we had to expect that it was going to go the other way, but it’s going the other way as a purge and as a cleanse,” he said. “This is the darkness before the dawn. When that thing swings back to the other direction, humanity is going to evolve.

“This is an evolutionary shift in humanity right now and it’s like when we went from the agricultural era to the industrial era into the digital age and I feel very, very strongly that we are shifting into what the next age of humanity is going to be right now,” he continued. “It’s just the s—t has to get stirred up. We’re seeing it all. The truth is right in front of us. Nobody is allowed to ignore what’s true anymore. You don’t even get to debate. You can [state] ‘alternative facts,’ but people actually get to look at it for themselves. Hiding is over. So that’s gonna be really interesting to see how humanity reacts to it and it’s gonna be a f–ing mess. It’s the mess in the clean up. It’s the mess and the purge before that new real light shows up.”

This isn’t the first time that Mr. Smith, a critic of Mr. Trump, has commented on the good that can come of his presidency. Just months before Mr. Trump was elected, Mr. Smith said it was a positive thing that his rhetoric was being exposed.

“As painful as it is to hear Donald Trump talk and as embarrassing as it is to hear him talk, I think it’s good,” Mr. Smith told a Dubai press conference, IndieWire reported. “We get to hear it, we get to know who people are, and now we get to cleanse it out of our country.
