49ers Players Upset After Fans Cheered When QB C.J. Beathard Was Injured

Fans certainly were excited to see Jimmy Garoppolo make his debut with the 49ers, but it came at a cost to starting quarterback C.J. Beathard.

Beathard suffered a leg injury in the final minutes of the 49ers’ 24-13 loss to the Seahawks, but instead of the usual silence from the crowd when a player is down, fans saw Garoppolo warming up on the sideline and began to cheer.

Although their intent may not have been malicious, it was fairly bad timing and left many of the 49ers players upset.

“Our starting [QB] got hurt and people are cheering before he even stands up,” safety Eric Reid said, per Mercury News. “That pisses me off. I’m disappointed in our fans. I understand the excitement about Jimmy, he’s a great player, but that’s not right.”

Linebacker Reuben Foster echoed the same feeling, saying the fans were unfair to Beathard, who was able to get up and walk off the field, regardless of how excited the crowd was to see Garoppolo play.
