The freedom that served Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Muhammed Ali is at stake. Currently there is a pause in the agenda that pitted liberal politics against people of faith and threatened our religious freedom. This presents an opening for Christians to advance the cause of Jesus. In contrast to a culture that has been increasingly hostile to the gospel, there is now an opportunity to present religious freedom in its true, life-giving light. The Seymour Institute’s high-level leadership summit will be an opportunity for black church leadership to engage this issue more fully.
The Necessity of Religious Freedom for the Black Church
A panel and discussion on the intellectual, pragmatic, theological and other arguments in favor of the vital importance of religious freedom in the current political and cultural setting. Special attention will be paid to the role of the black church. The perspective of the panelists’ denomination or other religious group will also be incorporated. Following presentations by the panel there will be a 30-minute discussion with the seminar participants.
Black Clergy and White Millennials’ View of Religious Freedom: The Research
A presentation of findings on the concerns of black clergy regarding religious freedom commissioned by the McLellan Foundation. A similar presentation on marketing research conducted by Becket on the reactions of black millennials to religious freedom claims will follow.
Black Millennials Discuss Religious Freedom
A panel and discussion on the perception in popular culture of religious freedom in the current political and cultural setting. Special attention will be paid to the views of millennials. The potential of the black church to influence these views will also be incorporated. Following presentations by the panel there will be a 60-minute discussion with the seminar participants.
Defending Religious Freedom: The SWOT Analysis
A panel and discussion on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats confronting national efforts to protect religious freedom in the current political and cultural setting, including what has already been achieved, the limits of current approaches, the dangers that lie ahead and strategies for overcoming them. Special attention will be paid to role of the black church. The perspective of the panelists’ denomination or other religious group will also be incorporated. Following presentations by the panel there will be a 60-minute discussion with the seminar participants.
The Key Role of the Black Church Among the Freedom Fighters

The Re-branding Strategy: A Planning Session
Options for addressing the threats and opportunities identified in the earlier presentations will be discussed. The goal is to craft a plan for re-branding religious freedom and to begin to shift.
The summit will engage 20-30 leaders of the black church from around the country.
