Minnesota Elects America’s First Ever Somali-American Legislator


What a night.

It’s small consolation, perhaps, but one refugee woman did make history last night: Ilhan Omar, who was elected to Minnesota’s House of Representatives. Omar, a 34-year-old Muslim woman and former refugee who wears a hijab, will become the country’s first Somali-American legislator. And that is real progress.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Omar’s family fled Somalia when she was 8 to escape the country’s civil war; they spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. She immigrated to the U.S. at age 12 and became interested in politics when she translated for her grandfather at the Minnesota caucuses.
