Cubs Win Game 5 of World Series; Baseball TV Ratings Beat Football for Only 2nd Time Ever

If you thought it was going to be over, the Chicago Cubs came back strong on Sunday to beat the Cleveland Indians 3-2 and remind everyone that they and 2016 World Series still had some fight in it.

And that fight once again gave Fox some strong ratings punch, including a rare Sunday night win and a Sunday Night Football TKO – to mix my sports terms.

Last night’s Game 5 of the World Series scored a 15.3/24 in metered market ratings compared to an 11.6/18 for NBC and the NFL as the Dallas Cowboys won over the Philadelphia Eagles 29-23 in overtime. Even with a 32% rise over the NBC powerhouse, for SNF last night was even in MM results with its lackluster Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks 6-6 tie of October 23, when the NFL went up against the Season 7 debut of The Walking Dead and lost in the key 18-49 demo.

While the first time a World Series Game 5 has knocked down SNF in the contemporary era, this is actually the second time a top championship baseball game has laid the NFL and NBC low. Back on October 23, 2011, Game 4 of the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers match-up topped the Indianapolis Colts 0-6 blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints
